The editors of the Belgian science magazine Eos agree with the Flemish Dissertation Award that scientific research deserves much more attention than it receives now. Eos therefore awards the best dissertation from within the field of the exact sciences or beta sciences with an extra dissertation award.
Students who have written a dissertation within the research field of the exact sciences – such as geology, biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, technical sciences or mathematics – have the chance to win two awards: the Flemish Dissertation Award ánd the "Eos" Award.
The winner of the 2010 "Eos" Award will receive a mini-laptop and editorial publicity in the magazine.
The deadline for sending in the dissertations is October 11. The regulations and registration form are the same as for the Flemish Dissertation Award. Just do not forget to make clear you want to enter the "Eos" Award. You can do this by ticking the 'exacte wetenschappen' box.
The jury of the Eos award consists of editors of the popular magazine.
Criteria:
* the subject belongs to the research field of the exact or positive sciences. Some examples from dissertations from earlier years: 'The use of antibiotics and resistance', 'The Wetlands of Kenya', 'How does our environment influence our genetic material?', 'Footballers and bow-leggedness (genu varum)', ' CO2 emissions in the international air traffic'. Subjects from within the research fields of physics, chemistry, astronomy or pure mathematics are of course welcome as well.
* the subject must be presented in a fluent, clear article, which is free of jargon and accesible to a broad audience. The article discusses the essence of your research and puts it in a wider perspective.
