Na regen komt zonneschijn (?)
Meters, neen kilometers kunststof werden onlangs gebruikt in het Zwitserse Andermatt om
een smeltende gletsjer af te dekken. Een actie, niet bedoeld als kunstzinnig ‘Cristo’project,
maar veeleer een letterlijke pleister op de wonde, een deels economisch, deels ecologisch
getinte wanhoopsdaad van de kleine mens tegen de wispelturigheden van een machtiger
natuur. Verwoestende orkanen (weliswaar met mooie meisjesnamen zoals Katrina),
stortregens die ware aardverschuivingen en overstromingen veroorzaken, … al deze
fenomenen roepen vragen op bij jong en oud, arm en rijk. Vragen waar wetenschappers zich
het hoofd over breken.
‘Het heden vormt de sleutel tot het verleden’, een wijsheid gedebiteerd door Lyell, de ‘vader
van de geologie’ en wie weet kan het verleden wel de toekomst helpen voorspellen. Bodems,
sedimenten, vegetatieresten, archeologische vindplaatsen, … dragen immers sporen in zich
van een ver verleden en kunnen verklaringen bieden voor de huidige gebeurtenissen. Want
veranderingen zijn van alle tijden! In het verre aardverleden deden zich immers al
klimaatveranderingen voor: de dinosaurussen leefden in een superbroeikastijdperk zonder
poolijskappen en mammoeten dwaalden zo’n 30 000 jaar geleden over de ijskoude Europese
vlaktes.
De studie van klimaatveranderingen spitste zich totnogtoe veel minder toe op het zuidelijke
halfrond, waardoor er nog heel wat meer hiaten in het klimaatverhaal bestaan dan voor zijn
noordelijke broertje. Steeds meer feiten wijzen er echter op dat de zuidelijke invloed op het
globale klimaatsysteem wel eens groter zou kunnen zijn dan gedacht!
Het voordeel van de studie van de Chileense klimaatgeschiedenis is dat deze ‘lange
continentale staart’ ver verwijderd is van de thermohaline Atlantische oceaancirculatie die
koud, superzout water naar de evenaar brengt en warm, minder zout, equatoriaal water naar de
polen. Door hun lange, smalle vorm reageren de Zuid-Amerikaanse ijskappen bovendien veel
sneller dan hun logge noordelijke tegenhangers. Ook kent deze zone een rijke vegetatie, die
pollen produceert. Deze pollen worden bewaard in meren en moerassen. Zij vormen een bron
van extra informatie bij de reconstructie van de klimaatgeschiedenis via de studie van de flora
in het verleden, aangezien vele planten alleen in bepaalde klimaatgordels groeien.
Al decennia lang is het Chileense merendistrict, dat geprangd ligt tussen de Andes en de
Cordillera de la Costa, een belangrijke studieregio. Deze streek met zijn vele meren en dense
vegetatie ligt net op de overgangszone tussen twee klimaatgordels waar een globale verkilling
of opwarming van het klimaat sneller gedetecteerd zal worden. De verschillende glaciale
meren zelf bleven echter steeds een ‘zwart gat’ in de zich geleidelijk opbouwende glaciale
dataset! Vandaar werd de studie van het Lago Puyehue-meer opgezet, als een onderdeel van “
a continuous Holocene record of ENSO variability in Southern Chile”, een
samenwerkingsverband tussen o.a. Universiteit Gent en Université de Liège.
Door seismische reflectiedata met een tamelijke diepe penetratie te gebruiken, soms
voldoende om de ganse meeropvulling te kunnen waarnemen, en door een bundeling te
maken van eigen geomorfologische observaties op het land in combinatie met reeds bestaande
kaarten werd de terugtrekking van de Puyehue-gletsjer op het einde van de laatste ijstijd (zo’n
20 000 jaar geleden) ‘gereconstrueerd’.

Situering van het Chileense merendistrict en het studiegebied (Lago Puyehue)
Dankzij de reflectieseismiek konden ook deze leemtes stilaan ontleed en ingevuld worden.
Klimaatveranderingen oefenen namelijk hun invloed uit op de sedimentaanvoer naar
meerbekkens, zoals het instromende
sedimentvolume en de timing ervan. De
reflectieseismiektechniek, oorspronkelijk
ontwikkeld voor de petroleumindustrie,
kan vergeleken worden met het maken
van een echografie. Dankzij
geluidsgolven bekomt men een idee van
wat er onder de aardkorst of meerbodem
zit, zonder het ganse gebied te moeten
afgraven. Afhankelijk van welke
frequentieband men gebruikt, krijgt men
een goede resolutie met een goed
detailbeeld als resultaat (bij hoge
frequenties) of een diepe penetratie in de
ondergrond (bij lage frequenties). De
verschillende op elkaar volgende
sedimentlagen van bv. zand, klei, grind,
… creëren ieder hun eigen
weerkaatsingssignaal.
Uiteindelijk verkrijgt men een beeld
bestaande uit bovenelkaar liggende
lijnen, als weergave van de vlakken
waarop de geluidsgolf reflecteerde. Deze
‘horizonten’ komen meestal goed
overeen met de contactvlakken tussen de Werking van de reflectieseismiektechniek (boven)
verschillende sedimenten die het meer- en een voorbeeld van een tweedimensionele
bekken opvullen. Afhankelijk van o.a. de ‘echo’ van de meeropvulling (onder)

karakteristieken en de locatie van de horizont kan men een hypothese over de aard van de
sedimentlaag opbouwen. Nadien wordt er vaak op een goed uitgekozen plaats een boring
uitgevoerd, die de gedane conclusies omtrent de verschillende soorten sedimenten bevestigt of
ontkracht.
Het voordeel van deze techniek is dat ze snel en tamelijk goedkoop is en het mogelijk maakt
een driedimensioneel beeld van het sedimentpakket te bekomen.
Zeker bij kleine waterbekkens mogen de geomorfologische verschijnselen aan de rand van het
water niet vergeten worden. Zo laten gletsjers op het land vaak puinruggen (morenes) achter,
die vaak de oorzaak van het ontstaan van de glaciale meren zijn, omdat ze een dam vormen
tegen het wegvloeien van het smeltwater. Bovendien gebeurt de terugschrijding van een
ijskap vaak in fases waardoor verschillende morenegordels elkaar opvolgen.
Glaciale meersedimenten zijn bizar genoeg overal ter wereld zeer gelijkend. Ook in de
Chileense meren kwam hetzelfde verhaal tot uiting. Eerst dacht men dat de nabijheid van
grote en zeer actieve Chileense vulkanen zou zorgen voor een andere opvullingsgeschiedenis,
maar blijkbaar brengt een gletsjer zelfs koning ‘vulkaan’ op de knieën. De nabijheid van de
vulkanen zorgt er enkel voor dat er iets meer en makkelijker transporteerbaar materiaal
voorhanden is.
De “nederlaag” van het ijs ten opzichte van de ‘opwarming’ gebeurde echter niet zo
rechtlijnig als gedacht. Fases van herstel en restabilisatie van de ijskap werden
teruggevonden, alsook bewijzen voor het feit dat de ene gletsjer sneller terugschrijdt dan
bijvoorbeeld zijn buurman. Daardoor bevond de Puyehue-gletsjer zich al halverwege het
Puyehue-meer, terwijl de net ten zuiden liggende Rupanco-gletsjer zijn meer nog volledig
bedekte, waardoor de laatste ook zijn sporen achterliet in de sedimentopvulling van Lago
Puyehue.
En terwijl u dit las, regende het in Schotland, scheen de zon in Mexico en woei er een koude
wind over Antartica. Kortom de natuur doet haar zin en tot nu toe kunnen we het weer nog
steeds niet naar onze hand zetten.
