Beeldvorming van sociaal werk & politie - case: soapseries

Tegenwoordig wordt er hevig gedebatteerd onder politici en academici over de aanpak van criminaliteit, maar evengoed worden deze discussies gevoerd bij de bakker of de slager. Kortom, criminaliteit is een hot issue. Het draait allemaal om de vraag of we moeten straffen of socialiseren. Als toekomstig master sociaal werk heb ik dit het spanningsveld tussen care/zorg (traditioneel de taak van het sociaal werk) en controle/beheersing (traditioneel de taak van politie en justitie) afgetast.

De media spelen vandaag de dag een steeds grotere rol in de beeldvorming van mensen, zeker wat betreft een actueel thema als de aanpak van criminaliteit. Wanneer mensen een beeld hebben over de politie en/of criminaliteit komt dit vaak door  media en meer specifiek door het bekijken van  de populaire politiedrama's. Om die reden heb ik gekozen voor de soapserie als case om deze twee discoursen te kunnen expliciteren.

Via een populaire politiedetective als NYPD Blue -de moeder der politieseries- ga ik het spanningsveld tussen care en control duiden om op die manier een discussie omtrent deze problematiek op gang te brengen. Zo wordt het belang van soapseries benadrukt als educatieve kracht binnen de opleiding van de politie en/of de sociaal werkers.

De focus van mijn onderzoek ligt op jongeren en hun ouders. Dit is binnen het sociaal werk namelijk een actueel thema. Ik ga na hoe jongeren en hun ouders gerepresenteerd worden, hoe politie wordt gepresenteerd en hoe politie omgaat met deze jongeren (en hun ouders). Zo kom ik tot de kern van mijn onderzoek, namelijk hoe care en control zich verhouden in NYPD Blue.

NYPD Blue is een kwaliteitsvolle serie omdat ze ons narratief vermogen kan stimuleren. Met een kritische blik kan deze serie - en de stereotypering die deze serie met zich meebrengt - ons een referentiekader aanreiken om de wereld beter te begrijpen. Op die manier is fictie een instrument tot reflectie en discussie over de praktijk van de politie, het sociaal werk of onze aanpak van (jeugd)delinquentie. Deze masterproef hoopt de educatieve kracht van fictie - voor het sociaal werk en het politiewerk - te benadrukken.
