Preferentietest rond densiteitsvoorkeur bij vleeskuikens

De keuze van de kip

Stel je voor dat je met tienduizend mensen wordt samengepropt op een kleine ruimte. Hoe zou jij je dan voelen? Niet zo prettig neem ik aan. Niet alleen mensen, maar ook dieren zijn gevoelig voor dichtheid. De laatste decennia worden nochtans tienduizenden kippen in de huidige intensieve kippenkweek zo dicht mogelijk op elkaar gezet, om economisch voordeel te halen uit energie en management. Maar hoe komen we te weten wat een kip ervaart bij het leven in zulke omstandigheden? Studente Mieke Kennis van het 3de jaar agro-en biotechnologie van de Katholieke Hogeschool Sint-Lieven te Sint-Niklaas poogde op deze vraag een antwoord te formuleren. In de proefaccomodatie van het ILVO (instituut voor landbouw-en visserijonderzoek) te Melle ontwikkelde zij samen met haar mentor Stephanie Buijs een preferentietest om deze voorkeur van vleeskippen te bepalen.

Welzijnsproblemen door een te hoge densiteit bij vleeskuikens

Studente Mieke aan het woord: ”Vandaag de dag zijn er heel wat welzijnsvragen over intensief gehouden vleeskippen. De vraag op welke densiteit de kippen best zouden worden gehouden, is hier één van. Het is geweten dat een (te) hoge bezettingsdichtheid resulteert in negatieve effecten, zoals hittestress en een verminderd groeicijfer. Het is echter de vraag of de kip dit zelf ook als onaangenaam ervaart? Helaas, we weten niet hoe onze kip zich hierbij voelt. Dat zullen we wellicht nooit weten, maar we kunnen wel uitzoeken of een kip het eerder een positieve of eerder een negatieve ervaring vindt. Dit kunnen we meten aan de hand van een preferentietest. Dit is een test waarbij de dieren de keuze hebben uit verschillende voorwerpen, ondergronden, voeder,… Er wordt gekeken naar wat de dieren het meest gebruiken of waar ze het meest verblijven. Zo kan een dier bepaalde keuzes maken in zijn omgeving en we nemen aan dat het dan de beste keuze maakt met betrekking tot zijn welzijn. Het dier gaat “stemmen met de voeten”. Voor mijn eindwerk heb ik dus zo’n preferentietest uitgevoerd.”     

 

Handen uit de mouwen

De eerste weken van haar project werkte ze samen met enkele technici van het ILVO om het proefhok te maken. Dit hok bestond uit een rechthoekige ruimte, met een verschuifbare tussenwand en verschuifbare zijde. Door middel van het tussenschot konden de kippen in het hok van elkaar worden gescheiden, zodat de helft van de kippen in een ruimte met hoge dichtheid zaten terwijl de andere helft zich in een ruimte met lage dichtheid bevond. Aan de hand van de verschuifbare zijde konden er verschillende dichtheden worden onderzocht. Na 2 uur trok Mieke vervolgens het tussenschot terug. Met behulp van camera’s observeerde ze daarna hoeveel vogels er van de ruimte met de hoge dichtheid naar die met een lage dichtheid gingen en omgekeerd. Dit experiment werd herhaald tijdens verschllende levensweken van de kuikens.

Resultaten

Wanneer ze over de nodige gegevens beschikte, verwerkte Mieke samen met haar mentor Stephanie de resultaten. Wat bleek? Wanneer het dichtheidsverschil het grootst was (dus wanneer in de ene ruimte de kuikens erg dicht op elkaar zaten en in de andere ruimte de kippen zeëen van plaats hadden), hadden de kippen wel degelijk een voorkeur naar een ruimte met een lage densiteit.

In haar eindwerk concludeert Mieke dat kippen in deze proef eerder een voorkeur hebben voor meer individuele ruimte om zich “kiplekker” te voelen. Kippenkwekers zouden dus meer rekening moeten met het welzijn van de kip, en bijgevolg de kip wat meer ruimte gunnen, in plaats enkel rekening te houden met hun economische resultaten.
