A comparison of the physicochemical variables and zooplankton community of two Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes: Chamo and Abaya

Verontrustende bevindingen betreffende twee grote Ethiopische Riftvallei Meren

De Ethiopische Riftvallei meren Chamo en Abaya zijn zeer grote en economisch belangrijke meren met een hoge biodiversiteit ten opzichte van andere Ethiopische Rift meren. Abaya kan bij de grote meren van de wereld (>500km2) gerekend worden, en beide meren zijn economisch belangrijk qua visvangst en toerisme. Het bekken dat ze samen en met hun rivieren vormen bezit het hoogst aantal vissoorten van alle Ethiopische Riftvallei bekkens. Deze meren worden echter geteisterd door zware problemen zoals een achteruitgang van economische belangrijke vissoorten (bv: Nijlbaars), het voorkomen van toxische algenbloei, en het zakken van het waterpeil in Chamo. In Chamo werd in 1978 een algenbloei geregistreerd met een ongewoon grote vissterfte en de dood van 75 zebra’s als gevolg. Om de algenbloei en vispopulatie problemen aan te pakken is het nodig te weten hoe de meren fysisch en chemisch functioneren, en hoe de verschillende componenten van het voedselweb elkaar beïnvloeden. Wij zijn de eersten die zo uitgebreid het mesozoöplankton van deze meren onderzoeken, en deze zijn normaal de belangrijkste grazers van algen (= fytoplankton), en vormen zo een belangrijke schakel in het voedselweb naar andere organismen. Fysisch en chemisch hebben we de meren ook vergeleken met elkaar en in de tijd, en we vonden verontrustende patronen.

Een productief helder meer

Onder de inheemse bevolking staat Chamo bekend om zijn mooi gekleurd blauw water, hoge visvangsten, en mooie taferelen van nijlkrokodillen die zonnen op de oevers en nijlpaarden die baden in het water. Terwijl Abaya bekend staat om zijn troebel roodbruin water, met lagere visvangsten, en lagere nijlkrokodildensiteiten die gevaarlijker zouden zijn omdat ze meer moeten knokken om hun magen te vullen. Wij bevestigen de grote lijnen, en vonden dat Chamo minder troebel was, en een grotere fyto- en zoöplankton biomassa en fytoplanktonproductie had dan Abaya. Fytoplankton en zooplankton zijn twee belangrijke componenten van het voedselweb en hun hogere biomassa en productie zijn dan ook goede indicatoren voor de biomassa en productie van het voedselweb. Het is echter verontrustend dat Chamo vertroebelt en meer naar de waarden van Abaya blijkt te neigen. Waardoor de productie in dit meer waarschijnlijk zal achteruitgaan, of al is gegaan. Troebele meren werken ook oppervlakkig fytoplankton in de hand door lichtcompetitie, en deze geven een nog lagere lichtpenetratie. Cyanobacteriën zijn een welgekend en verspreid voorbeeld van oppervlakkig fytoplankton (niet allemaal) met veel problematische en toxische soorten. Deze troebelheid heeft niet alleen effect op algen maar ook op veel andere organismen, die bijvoorbeeld visueel jagen (veel vissen) of onder het wateroppervlak leven en afhankelijk zijn van licht zoals vele waterplanten.

 

Verzouting

Chamo is veel zouter dan Abaya en het vertoont een stijgende trend sinds de eerste metingen in 1940 die niet lijkt te stagneren. Verzouting van meren kan veroorzaakt worden door afspoeling van land, waardoor zouten uit de bodem mee worden gevoerd, wat in de hand gewerkt wordt door ontbossing en irrigatielandbouw. Maar verzouting wordt ook veroorzaakt door een verminderde instroom van water, en een gelijkblijvend verlies aan water door verdamping, waardoor de zouten, die niet mee verdampen, in een grotere concentratie achterblijven. Beide factoren spelen waarschijnlijk mee in het gebied rond Chamo, aangezien er grote ontbossing en irrigatielandbouw is (Arba Minch State farm) en er verminderde waterinstroom is, dit door een vermindering in rivierdebiet door irrigatie en doordat Abaya minder in Chamo overstroomt omwille van een grote afzetting van sedimenten tussen de twee meren die een barrière vormen tussen de twee meren. Dit is een verontrustend patroon, aangezien verzouting bekend staat om zijn grote invloed op gemeenschapsstructuur van organismen, waar dan vooral een verschuiving plaatsvindt naar meer zouttolerante soorten.

 

Nutriënten

Stikstof en fosfor zijn nutriënten die zeer belangrijk zijn voor organismen. Denk maar aan het hoge gebruik van deze twee nutriënten in landbouw om de productie te verhogen. Deze twee nutriënten kunnen in verschillende concentraties het verschil maken tussen troebele en heldere waterstaten, door de gemeenschapssamenstelling van organismen te veranderen. Natuurlijk zijn er ook nog andere nutriënten limiterend voor organismen, maar stikstof en fosfor blijken zeer grote drijvers te zijn van de eutrofiëring (voedingstaat) in systemen. En een te hoge eutrofiëring heeft vaak slechte gevolgen voor de biodiversiteit. Beide meren blijken een hoog fosforgehalte te hebben en een gemiddeld stikstofgehalte, en deze concentraties waren ongeveer gelijk in beide meren. Stikstof is het limiterende nutriënt in beide meren, en er was minder beschikbaar stikstof (opgelost en bruikbaar voor organismen) in Chamo dan in Abaya. Lage gehaltes aan beschikbaar stikstof kunnen leiden tot algensoorten die zelf hun stikstof fixeren, zoals cyanobacterieën.  Fosfor metingen in beide meren, en totale stikstof metingen in Chamo, zijn allen hoger sinds na 2005. Dit komt misschien door intensivering van de landbouw en moet opgevolgd worden om eutrofiëring van de meren te voorkomen.

 

Zooplankton

In de mesozoöplankton gemeenschap vonden we een zeer gelijkende taxonomische samenstelling tussen beide meren. Hoewel hun distributiepatronen verschillend waren. We vonden ook een typische soort van de gematigde streken, namelijk Daphnia magna, die normaalgezien niet voorkomt in de tropen en waar veel over geweten is. Dus deze soort zal misschien belangrijke ecologische patronen van deze meren kunnen blootleggen in de toekomst. Zooplankton abundantie en biomassa waren hoog in Chamo ten opzichte van de tropen, terwijl deze eerder laag waren in Abaya. We vonden ook dat, zoals in de meeste tropische meren, de watervlooien gemiddeld niet groter waren dan 1 mm. Verder vonden we dat beide meren gedomineerd werden door copepoden, die veel specifieker zijn in het kiezen van eten dan watervlooien, door gespecialiseerde mechano- en chemoreceptoren. En dit bevoordeelt dan weer de oneetbare toxische soorten.

 

Conclusie

We kunnen besluiten dat beide meren karakteristieken vertonen die problematische fytoplanktonsoorten in de hand werken, en dat beide meren aan het veranderen zijn. Daarom dringen we er op aan dat deze meren nauwgezet en wetenschappelijk gegrond in het oog moeten worden gehouden, en dat maatregelen genomen moeten worden betreffende de instroomrivieren en de visserij voor het welzijn van natuur en mens in het omringend gebied.
