De fantasmagorie van Electrified III - The Responsive City

Wat maakt kunst in de publieke ruimte zo aantrekkelijk? Deze vraagstelling komt als kunstwetenschapper vaak bij mij op. Meer en meer krijgt men te maken met grote stadsfestivals, performances in de publieke ruimte of architecturale huzarenstukken. Vanwaar die interesse van kunstenaars om de publieke ruimte op te zoeken? En belangrijker: hoe blijft zo’n project artistiek relevant zonder in de valkuil van entertainment terecht te komen? Waar ligt de grens tussen kunst en spektakel? Deze vragen creëerden een interessant onderzoek over publieke ruimte, het alledaagse leven en onze technologische cultuur.

Deze masterproef richt zich op performances in de publieke ruimte, meer bepaald twee performances uit het theaterfestival Electrified III – The Responsive City van Vooruit dat plaatsvond in het najaar van 2012. In de derde editie van dit festival focussen de kunstenaars zich op de verschillende verborgen lagen van een stad. Zowel de performance The swamp that was... a bicycle opera van Kaffe Matthews als Tommorow the ground forgets you were here van het collectief Circumstance maken daarbij gebruik van GPS-bestuurde technologie. In de eerst vernoemde performance rijdt de deelnemer rond met een fiets voorzien van geluidsboxen. Muziek en verhalen worden getriggerd naargelang de desbetreffende plek. Bij het project van Circumstance wandelt de deelnemer rond met een koptelefoon met ingebouwde microfoontjes. Deze technologische vernuftigdheden zorgen voor een spektakelgehalte. Welke rol is er weggelegd voor technologie in performances? Omdat een mening niet volstaat, worden interviews van verschillende deelnemers van Electrified III gebruikt. Hun bedenkingen en opmerkingen vervolledigen de masterproef.

Nadat de context van Electrified III wordt geschetst, handelt het eerste deel over het alledaagse leven. Aan de hand van theorieën van de Franse cultuurfilosofen Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) en Michel de Certeau (1925-1986) wordt aangetoond dat le quotidien geen banaal, statisch gegeven is, maar dat het een revolterende en actieve kracht in zich draagt. Het alledaagse kan een voedingsbodem zijn voor onze creativiteit. Verschillende elementen van de dagelijkse realiteit die in Electrified III voorkomen – (publieke) ruimte, de stad, de straat, wandelen en geschiedenis – zijn nader geanalyseerd met de theorieën van Lefebvre en Certeau, maar ook van Gaston Bachelard, Walter Benjamin en Rebecca Solnit. Deze theorieën worden dan terug gekoppeld met de meningen en ideeën van de deelnemers van Electrified III, waardoor theorie en praktijk samenkomen en verrassend wel elkaar aanvullen.

“Dans certains états de l’âme presque surnaturels, la profondeur de la vie se révèle toute entière dans le spectacle, si ordinaire qu’il soit, qu’on a sous les yeux. Il en deveint le symbole.” Het dagelijkse, banale leven is als het ware een spektakel, schrijft Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) al in de negentiende eeuw. In het tweede deel van de masterproef wordt er dieper ingegaan op de spektakelwaarde van het alledaagse leven aan de hand van twee kunststromingen uit de twintigste eeuw. Het surrealisme ziet in het alledaagse leven een magische, sur-reële kracht, het situationisme zet zich daarentegen af tegen de spektakelmaatschappij. In beide stromingen speelt het alledaagse echter de kern en gebruiken ze de publieke ruimte als experiment om hun kunsopvattingen te verwezelijken. Bij zowel het surrealisme als situationisme kan er een besproken filosoof betrokken worden. Walter Benjamin heeft veel surrealistische trekken overgenomen om zijn nooit afgewerkte traktaat Das Passagen-Werk te bedenken, net zoals de relatie tussen Henri Lefebvre en het situationistisch kopstuk Guy Debord (1931-1994) heeft gezorgd voor de uitwisseling van ideeën.

Ten slotte worden deze kunststromingen in het derde deel vergeleken met Electrified III aan de hand van de theorieën over postmodernisme van David Harvey (1935) en Frederic Jameson (1934). De gelijkenissen en verschillen tussen de modernistische kunststromingen en onze postmoderne context worden duidelijk geïllustreerd door deze geografische theoretici en worden daarbij nog eens bevestigd door de ervaringen van de deelnemers. Bovendien wordt het begrippenapparaat van de surrealisten, Walter Benjamin en situationisten hergebruikt bij de casus Electrified III waardoor ze een vernieuwende, hedendaagse invulling krijgen.

Aan de hand van de postmodernistische analyses van Jameson en Harvey en de nieuwe duiding van begrippen ontstaat er nieuwe visie over performances in de publieke ruimte. Sommige karakteristieken hebben zich radicaler doorgetrokken, andere kenmerken zijn nieuw. Deze verfrissende blik op de postmoderne notie van de publieke ruimte creëert mogelijkheden om op artistiek vlak te experimenteren zodat performances in de publieke ruimte met gebruik van technologie stilstaan bij het eigentijdse gebruik van onze leefomgeving. In dit onderzoek wordt er nagedacht over de inhoudelijk invulling van dergelijke performances. Zeker in tijden van city marketing en allerhande culturele publieke festiviteiten, is het nodig om over de inhoudelijke kant van performances in de publieke ruimte te waken. Men mag niet vervallen in puur spektakel. Met deze masterproef wordt aangetoond dat performances in de publieke ruimte net een middel kunnen zijn om te reflecteren over de maatschappij.

De concrete publieke ruimte krijgt concurrentie van een nieuwe publieke wereld: naast de alledaagse realiteit ontspint er zich een virtuele publieke ruimte waarin men zich meer en meer nestelt. Electrified III toont dit aan. De deelnemers zijn steeds afhankelijk van de technologie: het wijst hen de weg, laat hen verhalen horen, triggert anekdotes ..., het vormt een virtuele speelruimte. Maar het laat hen soms ook in de steek door hapering en feedback. De participanten lopen als het ware in twee verschillende werelden: de concrete en imaginaire. Electrified III doet ons nadenken over de onoverzichtelijke virtuele wereld, over het blinde vertrouwen in de technologie en de aanhankelijkheid ervan. Electrified III geeft geen rust, maar berust ons net. Geen puur entertainment, maar het betrapt ons op onze dagelijkse gewoontes.
