Een effectieve excursie ... begint in de klas

Op uitstap met de klas. Maakt voorbereiding het verschil?

Wanneer leerlingen in een omgeving terechtkomen die té nieuw is, ervaren ze stress en leren ze minder goed. Dat verschijnsel heet het novelty-effect. Voorbereiding kan deze novelty verminderen. Dit gegeven stond centraal in een onderzoek, gevoerd bij 484 leerlingen en 25 leer- krachten van het vijfde en zesde leerjaar.

Vooral cognitieve leereffectenDe kinderen gingen een halve dag op herfstexcursie naar een heidegebied. Het onderzoek toont aan dat leerlingen tijdens deze excursie heel wat leren. Een belangrijk doel van leerkrachten en organisatoren is om kennis over de natuur over te dragen. Dat lukt ook: de ecosysteemkennis van leerlingen gaat er sterk op vooruit. Minder succesvol is het opzet om milieuwaarden te beïn- vloeden en liefde voor de natuur te bevorderen. Er zijn grote verschillen tussen leerlingen: som- migen evolueren in de ‘gewenste’ richting, anderen doen net het omgekeerde. Globaal zijn de affectieve leereffecten veel kleiner dan de cognitieve. ‘Jammer, want net die factoren beïnvloeden of iemand later positief milieugedrag zal stellen’, stelt de onderzoeker.

Een diverse voorbereidingspraktijkHet onderzoek toont een diverse voorbereidingspraktijk aan: terwijl sommige leerkrachten hun leerlingen grondig voorbereiden, besteden anderen hier weinig of geen tijd aan. Nieuw in het onderzoek is dat het cognitieve, ruimtelijke en mentale excursievoorbereiding in kaart brengt. De drie dimensies komen in de klas ongeveer evenveel aan bod, zo blijkt. Opvallend: één op vijf leerlingen in het zesde leerjaar wordt nauwelijks voorbereid op de excursie. In het vijfde leerjaar is dat zelfs één op drie.

Voorbereiding loontBijna de helft van de leerlingen was nooit eerder in het gebied geweest. De novelty van de excursie-omgeving is voor deze leerlingen hoog, wat het leren kan hinderen. Voorbereiding in de klas kan dit novelty-effect verminderen, zo is bekend. Voor ecosysteemkennis kon dit effect wor- den aangetoond. Voor andere leeruitkomsten lukte dat niet. De onderzoeker verklaart: ‘Er zijn aanwijzingen dat ook voor de andere leeruitkomsten een optimaal niveau van novelty bestaat, maar om dit aan te tonen waren de affectieve leereffecten te klein’.

Met de klas naar een museum, de dierentuin of een natuurgebied. Iedereen kan zich uit zijn kindertijd zulke uitstappen herinneren. Leuk, dat zeker, maar zijn zulke schoolexcursies ook effectief? En beïnvloedt voorbereiding deze effectiviteit? Jan Van Hoof vroeg het zich af. Voorbereiding loont, zo blijkt, maar blijft nog te vaak achterwege.

Veel te lerenOnderzoekers zijn het erover eens: leerlingen kunnen veel leren tijdens een schoolexcursie, en novelty kan dit leren verhinderen. De excursiepraktijk kan om die reden soms nog beter. De onderzoeker eindigt met twee adviezen voor wie schoolexcursies organiseert. ‘Leerlingen hebben geen baat bij een verrassingsexcursie. Een goede excursie begint daarom al in de klas, met vol- doende en kwalitatieve voorbereiding.’ Het tweede advies is om meer aandacht te besteden aan de affectieve leerdoelen. Jan Van Hoof licht toe: ‘In de excursie die ik onderzocht wordt kennis over- gedragen maar blijven de affectieve doelen wat in de kou staan. Dat kan veranderen door hieraan tijdens de excursie meer aandacht te besteden. Liefde voor de natuur kun je aanleren. Dat lijkt me meer dan ooit belangrijk.’
