Katharen en het vierde evangelie. Gebruik en betekenis van het Johannesevangelie in kathaarse theologische en rituele teksten

Wat is bestaan? De tafel waaraan ik zit, de computer waarop ik letters intik, het scherm waarop deze woorden verschijnen, het licht dat door het raam naar binnen valt, de vogel die landt op een tak van de boom, mijn vingers die over het toetsenbord bewegen, de lucht die door mijn longen stroomt, mijn brein dat gedachten omzet in taal: dit alles bestaat. Ik besta. Op deze dag, mijn verjaardag, wijst alles erop dat ik leef, dat ik er ben. Rondom mij strekt zich een wereld uit, dat weet ik. En ver buiten de grenzen van mijn weten is er nog steeds dat immense heelal. Een heelal dat bestaat.

 

En als dit nu eens niet klopte? Wat als deze zichtbare, materiële wereld niet de werkelijkheid zou zijn? Als alles wat wij “werkelijkheid” noemen, eigenlijk niets zou zijn? Of liever “Niets”, met een hoofdletter, hèt Niets, waarmee ik bedoel dat het niet bestaat.

Wij denken weinig na over dit Niets, misschien omdat we het ons niet kunnen voorstellen. Telkens als wij dat proberen wordt het 'iets': in onze verbeelding kleuren we het zwart of we trekken een cirkel rond het heelal. 'Daarbuiten', 'ergens' stopt het. Dààr eindigt alles, daar begint het Niets. Maar net door die woorden te gebruiken, lijven we het weer in, doen we alsof we het kennen. En dat kan niet: wij, bestaande wezens, bestuderen het bestaande. Alleen het bestaande is kenbaar. Dat spreekt vanzelf, want er is niets anders.

 

Kunnen we het even omdraaien? We maken een negatieve afdruk: alles wat wit was, wordt zwart en omgekeerd. Alles wat wij het bestaande noemen is 'niets' en bestaat dus eigenlijk niet – dat wat wij 'niets' noemen en waarvan wij overtuigd zijn dat het niet bestaat, bestaat wèl. Het is zelfs het enige.

 

In 1321 getuigt Arnaut Teisseire voor de rechtbank van de inquisitie in Pamiers. Ooit had hij een discussie met zijn schoonvader, Pèire Autier, over de betekenis van een zinnetje uit de proloog van het evangelie volgens Johannes: Alles is door hem ontstaan, en buiten hem om is er niets ontstaan. “Ik zei dat ik dacht dat dat wilde zeggen dat God alles geschapen heeft,” zegt Teisseire, “maar Pèire antwoordde dat ik er niets van begrepen had, dat God weliswaar alles had gemaakt, maar dat alles ook buiten God om bestond. Dat tweede 'alles' was volgens hem 'niets', nihil: de dingen van deze wereld.”

Pèire Autier was een kathaar, een voortrekker van de heropleving van deze ketterij aan het begin van de 14de eeuw. Er was een kruistocht in regel aan te pas gekomen, de paus had de inquisitie in het leven geroepen, maar het katharisme was niet dood. En die overtuiging – dat de materiële werkelijkheid niet door God is gemaakt en dus niet bestaat, want “buiten God om kan niets bestaan”, zoals de evangelist Johannes zegt – dragen zij al van het begin met zich mee. Tegenstanders verwijten katharen dat ze de betekenis van deze bijbeltekst verdraaien, getuigen vermelden voor de inquisitie dat ze het in een preek hebben gehoord en in de enkele authentieke kathaarse teksten die bewaard zijn gebleven, wordt het zeer nadrukkelijk uitgelegd: deze wereld is géén goddelijke schepping. Dat is eraan te merken: al het materiële gaat op de duur kapot, levende wezens sterven. De ware aard van dit alles is immers niets en dat Niets vreet het aan, zoals roest of schimmel. Dat wat God gemaakt heeft is eeuwig, dat verslijt niet, dat is goed, ook in de morele betekenis van het woord. En omdat een stukje van ons, dat immateriële ding dat de ziel is, ook door God is gemaakt, zijn wij in staat dat 'andere' te leren kennen. Wij hebben er zelfs al een vermoeden van, want wij voelen ons hier niet thuis. Wij verlangen naar een goedheid die wij op aarde niet vinden.

 

De overtuiging dat een goede God alleen maar actief kan zijn in het goede, is niet door katharen verzonnen. Al eeuwen lang wordt het door kerkvaders en theologen bevestigd: God heeft alleen goede dingen geschapen. Maar waar komt het kwaad dan vandaan, de pijn en het lijden? Hoe konden die ontstaan in een schepping die per definitie goed was? Op die beangstigende vraag zijn vele verschillende antwoorden geformuleerd, zonder dat het probleem hiermee van de baan was. Katharen stellen een radicale oplossing voor. Wat wit leek wordt zwart, wat ver weg in het duister verscholen zat, wordt een stralend licht. Met één grote zwaai tuimelt de kenbare werkelijkheid in de diepe ravijn van het Niets, want God heeft met deze wereld niets te maken.

Nochtans kunnen wij, mensen die op aarde leven, het werkelijk bestaande leren kennen. Katharen zeggen: “Slechts door één van ons te worden, kun je God bereiken. Dan pas kun je bidden.” En het is natuurlijk onzin om in dat gebed te zeggen: “Geef ons heden ons dagelijks brood”, want daar houdt God zich immers niet mee bezig, met het graan dat groeit, met het welslagen of mislukken van de oogst. Wat wij hem moeten vragen is dat hij het wezen van ons zijn zou ondersteunen – en dat is niet materieel. Het brood waarmee God ons kan voeden is supersubstantieel, het is een brood van woorden. Het is het Woord zelf dat hij spreekt. Het Woord dat “in het begin was” (Joh 1,1) en dat zijn zoon is. Of het licht. Of de goedheid. Of de liefde. Dat alles is het ware “zijn”. Al het andere, dat waar wij dagelijks mee te maken hebben, is alleen maar rommel.

 

Mensen vragen mij soms waarom ik mij bezig hou met zo'n pessimistisch wereldbeeld als dat van de middeleeuwse katharen. Maar ik begrijp niet wat er pessimistisch is aan de overtuiging dat er een “ander zijn” bestaat. Een Zijn dat ons naar waarde schat en dat gelooft in onze kracht om het goede te doen, ondanks de schijn van het tegendeel.
