Synthese, karakterisering en efficiëntie van plasmon geactiveerde fotokatalysatoren onder UV en zichtbaar licht

Efficiënter gebruik van gratis zonlicht

Het idee om gratis zonlicht te gebruiken als een duurzame bron van energie heeft de laatste jaren meer en meer aandacht gekregen. Zo zijn reeds systemen ontwikkeld waarbij zonne-energie kan worden omgezet in elektrische energie (zonnepanelen met fotovoltaïsche cellen) of warmte (zonneboilers). Het is echter ook mogelijk om zonne-energie om te zetten in chemische energie met behulp van een fotokatalysator. Deze chemische energie kan dan bijvoorbeeld worden gebruikt om een brede waaier aan milieuverontreinigende stoffen af te breken. De efficiëntie waarmee huidige fotokatalysatoren lichtenergie absorberen en converteren naar chemische energie is echter niet erg hoog. In deze masterproef wordt aangetoond dat dit probleem kan worden verholpen door gebruik te maken van nanopartikels van goud en zilver. Deze nanopartikels (hele kleine bolletjes met een diameter die 1000 keer kleiner is dan de dikte van een mensenhaar) vertonen door hun kleine afmetingen speciale eigenschappen die een efficiënte interactie met zonne-energie toelaten.

In 1895 definieerde Wilhelm Ostwald katalyse als volgt: “Katalysatoren zijn substanties die de snelheid van een reactie veranderen zonder de energiefactoren van de reactie te modificeren.” Een katalysator is dus een actieve chemische toeschouwer die de snelheid van een reactie beïnvloedt zonder zelf te worden verbruikt. Opdat een chemische reactie kan doorgaan, moet voldoende energie (bijvoorbeeld warmte of licht) aanwezig zijn om een zogenaamde energieberg te kunnen overwinnen. Wanneer er weinig energie aanwezig is, kan deze berg slechts traag (of zelfs niet) worden overwonnen. Wat een katalysator doet, is deze energieberg verlagen waardoor de chemische reactie versneld wordt (of toch kan doorgaan) omwille van een lagere energiebehoefte. Dit concept kan met andere woorden vergeleken worden met het beklimmen van een berg. Zo is het eenvoudiger en minder energie-intensief om een kleine heuvel te beklimmen dan een grote berg.

Wanneer een reactie met behulp van een vaste stof en licht wordt gekatalyseerd, spreekt men van fotokatalyse en wordt de vaste stof een fotokatalysator genoemd. Fotokatalyse kan dus bekeken worden als een combinatie van katalyse en fotochemie waar de energie van het invallende licht wordt gebruikt om de energieberg te overwinnen en de reactie dus te versnellen. Het is een aantrekkelijke en veelbelovende technologie waarbij de fotokatalysator in staat is om op een duurzame manier de lucht -en waterkwaliteit te verbeteren door milieuvervuilende stoffen af te breken. Het systeem houdt de vervuilers niet alleen vast, zoals een filter dat doet, maar breekt ze dus ook af tot minder schadelijke producten zoals CO2 en H2O. Daarnaast kunnen fotokatalysatoren gebruikt worden voor de ontwikkeling van zelfreinigende oppervlakken. Deze zijn in staat om hun esthetisch voorkomen te behouden of te herstellen met behulp van zonne-energie (bijvoorbeeld ramen die nooit vuil worden of gebouwen die niet verkleuren door roetafzetting).

Een ideale fotokatalysator is stabiel, eenvoudig te produceren en te gebruiken, goedkoop, niet giftig en efficiënt te activeren met zonlicht. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) voldoet aan bijna al deze vereisten en kan dus als een nagenoeg ideale fotokatalysator worden beschouwd. Daarom is TiO2 vandaag de dag de meest gebruikte katalysator voor de afbraak van een brede waaier aan vervuilende stoffen onder invloed van licht. Een groot nadeel is echter zijn beperkte activiteit onder zichtbaar licht (bijvoorbeeld gratis zonlicht). Omwille van intrinsieke eigenschappen van TiO2 kan enkel hoogenergetisch UV licht worden aangewend om de katalysator te activeren. Aangezien slechts vijf procent van het zonnespectrum bestaat uit UV straling, kan maar een kleine fractie van het zonlicht worden gebruikt. Dit beperkt dan ook sterk de praktische bruikbaarheid van TiO2 voor toepassingen onder zonlicht.

 

In deze masterproef wordt dit probleem verholpen door TiO2 te modificeren met edelmetaal nanopartikels van goud en zilver. Deze nanopartikels worden vastgehecht aan het oppervlak van TiO2 om zo een nanopartikel/TiO2 composiet fotokatalysator te bekomen (Bijlage 1). Omwille van hun kleine afmetingen vertonen de nanopartikels specifieke optische eigenschappen waarvan handig gebruik kan worden gemaakt. Deze zorgen namelijk voor een betere interactie met het invallende licht. De metallische nanopartikels maken het mogelijk om zichtbaar licht, wat normaal niet gebruikt kan worden om de fotokatalytische reacties aan te drijven, toch op te vangen en door te geven aan TiO2­ (Bijlage 2). Zo zorgen de nanopartikels voor een verhoogde activiteit onder zichtbaar licht en kan gratis zonlicht toch efficiënt aangewend worden voor fotokatalytische toepassingen.
