Mind Maps in het onderwijs – puur tijdverlies of wetenschappelijk effectief?

“Mind Maps; het letterlijk in kaart brengen van gedachten”

Sinds enkele jaren duiken Mind Maps steeds meer op in educatieve contexten zoals in lagere scholen. Heeft het aanleren van deze techniek invloed op het leerproces van leerlingen of is het puur tijdverlies? Wetenschappelijk onderzoek is de beste manier om hierover uitsluitsel te bieden.

Iedereen herinnert zich nog de tijd dat hij/zij op de schoolbanken zat in de lagere school. Vaardigheden die ieder mens voor de rest van zijn leven zal blijven gebruiken werden er aangeleerd: lezen, schrijven, rekenen ... Laat ‘het leren’ nu juist het uitgangspunt zijn waarbinnen deze studie is opgebouwd. Meer specifiek wordt het effect van Mind Map-trainingsessies op het zelfregulerend leren van leerlingen bij het begrijpend lezen binnen de derde graad lager onderwijs bestudeerd.

Zelfregulerend lerenMet zelfregulerend leren wordt bedoeld dat er wordt gekeken naar de manier waarop leerlingen leren, de kennis die leerlingen zelf hebben over hoe ze leren en welke rol motivatie hierbij speelt.

Dit zelfregulerend leren is een belangrijke manier om op een actieve en effectieve manier te werken aan de leergebiedoverschrijdende eindtermen ‘leren leren’ in het lager onderwijs. Het belang om deze vaardigheden aan te leren in de lagere school uit zich zeker met betrekking tot begrijpend lezen en leren. Deze vaardigheden zijn ook cruciaal in het middelbaar onderwijs waar de leerlingen steeds grotere hoeveelheden informatie uit teksten moeten verwerken en verwerven.

Mind MappingOm aan het zelfregulerend leren tegemoet te komen, zijn er strategieën nodig om gestructureerd te kunnen leren. Mind Mapping is hier een voorbeeld van. Mind Mapping is een schematiseertechniek dat gebruikt wordt om op een gestructureerde manieren teksten samen te vatten. Maar wat maakt Mind Maps verschillend van andere technieken?  Bij Mind Maps staan zowel het inhoudelijke (de kernwoorden) als het visuele (de afbeeldingen) centraal. Met de Mind Map-techniek gaan leerlingen ook actief hun voorkennis koppelen aan nieuwe informatie en ideeën. Deze multisensoriële techniek, die beide hersenhelften activeert, laat leerlingen gebruikmaken van meerdere aspecten van hun hersenen wat enkel voordelen te bieden heeft. Optimaal Mind Mappen is gebaseerd op het respecteren van een aantal regels met betrekking tot de organisatie, de vormgeving en de inhoud van de Mind Maps.

 

Het leren, de beleving, de waardering en het competententiegevoel bij Mind MappingBovenstaande aspecten werden in kaart gebracht met behulp van de opzet van een Mind Map-interventie in de derde graad lager onderwijs. Deze tien weken durende Mind Map training vond plaats in vijf basisscholen in Vlaanderen (elf klassen, in totaal 220 leerlingen uit het vijfde en zesde leerjaar). Deze interventie, met bijhorende lespakketten, nam wekelijks één uur in beslag waarbij de thema’s van de lessen aansloten bij de eindtermen Nederlands, wereldoriëntatie en de leergebiedoverschrijdende eindtermen ‘leren leren’. Wat bleek? Na de training toonden de leerlingen overwegend positieve effecten  van de interventie op hun leren en de kennis die ze hebben over hun leren. Dit was het geval voor zowel leerlingen met lage, middelmatige, hoge prestaties als voor leerlingen met een leerprobleem. Deze positieve evolutie was ook te zien door de kwaliteitsverbetering van hun gemaakte Mind Maps. De leerlingen zelf gaven aan dat ze in een mindere mate de positieve effecten ondervonden van deze interventie. Toch bleken deze effecten overwegend positief aanwezig te zijn wanneer de gebruikte leerstrategieën en schematiseertechnieken onder de loep genomen werden. Hiernaast ervoeren de meeste leerlingen de interventie als aangenaam en had deze een positief effect op hun motivatie om de Mind Mapping-techniek verder te blijven gebruiken. De leerlingen voelden zich na de training ook voldoende competent om Mind Maps te maken en ze hadden er een positieve waardering over. Dit laatste was zelf sterker aanwezig bij leerlingen die minder goed presteren en bij leerlingen met een leerprobleem. Het meest enthousiast waren de meeste leerlingen over het kleurgebruik bij het maken van Mind Maps. De vereiste tijd nodig voor het opstellen van kwaliteitsvolle Mind Maps werd als een mogelijk struikelblok aangehaald voor verder gebruik in latere studies.

Ter conclusie toont deze studie aan dat oefenen op de Mind Map-vaardigheden in de derde graag lager onderwijs met betrekking tot begrijpend lezen zeker geen tijdverspilling is. De resultaten tonen overwegend positieve effecten op verschillende domeinen van het leren voor leerlingen met lage, middelmatige en goede prestaties als voor leerlingen met een leerprobleem. Het loont dus zeker de moeite om leerlingen op een efficiënte en effectieve manier te stimuleren in hun zelfregulerend leren en hen te laten experimenteren met Mind Maps. Hierbij is het geven van goede instructies noodzakelijk en dient er voldoende aandacht geschonken te worden aan het differentiëren tussen leerlingen. Dit is ook belangrijk om de transfer van de geleerde strategieën naar andere leergebieden te optimaliseren.
