De praktijk van interculturele bemiddeling in Vlaamse ziekenhuizen

De achterstelling van allochtonen in de zorgsector is in zowat alle Westerse landen een vooraanstaande problematiek. Taalkundige, sociaal-culturele en diverse barrières gaan ten koste van een efficiënte en kwalitatieve zorgverlening en dialoog. Het is op basis daarvan dat het Koninklijke Besluit aangaande de subsidiëring van interculturele bemiddeling in ziekenhuizen tot stand gekomen is en sinds 1999 in praktijk is gebracht.

In deze masterscriptie wordt getracht op basis van 24 diepte-interviews (met respectievelijk interculturele bemiddelaars, de betreffende coördinatoren, zorgverleners die regelmatig met zulke bemiddelaars in aanraking komen en twee patiënten) overheen 10 Vlaamse ziekenhuizen de praktische uitwerking hiervan na te gaan en haar socio-economische determinanten in kaart te brengen. Dit wordt gedaan met behulp van de opstelling en toetsing van een theoretisch ideaaltype en de betreffende knelpunten in praktijk.

Hierbij wordt de mate dat theorie en praktijk momenteel nog haaks op elkaar staan door een beperking in tijd en budget in detail ontrafeld. Er wordt dan ook besloten dat de praktijk van interculturele bemiddeling in Vlaamse ziekenhuizen vanuit socio-economisch oogpunt nog heel wat voeten in de aarde heeft. De praktijk anno 2014 blijkt nood te hebben aan een meer formele, robuuste keuzehiërarchie die geënt is op behoeftigheid en haar meerduidige jobinhoud en rekening houdt met haar bredere sociale diversiteitsproblematiek.
