Hiërarchische zeolieten als potentiële katalysatoren in de commerciële valorisatie van terpenen

Afval, het parfum van de toekomst

Even opfrissen en een vers geperst fruitsapje. Voor heel wat Vlamingen het verloop van de ochtend.  Verassend genoeg slechts één hoofdproduct nodig voor dit alles: de citrusvrucht.

AFVAL, DE NIEUWE GRONDSTOFSteeds meer bedrijven zetten vandaag in op de verwerking van afval. Slogans als “afval bestaat niet” en “toonaangevend in duurzaam afvalbeheer” beheersen meer en meer de huidige industrie. Dit alles kadert in de toenemende groene gedachtegang van de maatschappij. We staan dan ook voor het beslissende punt waarbij zorgvuldiger moet worden omgesprongen met milieu, energie en duurzaamheid van producten en processen. Deze zware uitdaging enkel en alleen afschuiven op de citrusvrucht is zonder twijfel een brug te ver. Bijdragen tot een aangename ochtend moet wel tot de mogelijkheden behoren. Zo blijkt alvast uit recent onderzoek van het Centrum voor Oppervlaktechemie en Katalyse (COK).

KATALYSATORHet onderzoek van het COK vertrekt uit beschikbare afvalstromen, waarin terpenen de hoofdcomponent is. Terpenen is een klasse chemische verbindingen met een karakteriserende smaak en geur. Een typisch voorbeeld is de schil van citrusvruchten, waaruit het terpeen limoneen gewonnen kan worden. Door middel van chemie kan deze component worden omgezet in nog interessantere terpenen of afgeleiden. Gezien de specifieke smaak en geur van deze componenten, worden deze vaak toegevoegd aan parfums, verzorgingsproducten, geneesmiddelen en voedingsmiddelen.

Om de chemische omzetting naar deze interessante chemicaliën ook daadwerkelijk te realiseren, is er nood aan een katalysator. Dit is een materiaal die de bedoeling heeft om de chemische reactie te versnellen. Zo’n katalysator maakt de inzetbaarheid van zo’n proces op industrieel niveau vaak relevant. Katalysatoren met de gewenste eigenschappen zijn bovendien vandaag reeds beschikbaar. Het is eigenlijk een soort poeder, waarbij elke korrel heel veel kleine poriën – niet waarneembaar met het oog - bevat. Binnenin die poriën zijn de vereiste eigenschappen – nodig voor de chemische reactie - aanwezig. Jammer genoeg is de omvang van de startcomponent groter dan de poriegrootte van de katalysator. De startcomponent kan de specifieke plaatsen met de gewenste eigenschappen bijgevolg niet bereiken. Hierdoor vindt de chemische omzetting onvoldoende plaats. Het is alsof een vrachtwagen van 3 m hoog de stadskern wil binnenrijden, maar op de enige toegangsweg staat een brug van slechts 2 m hoog. Globaal vindt op nanoschaal in en rond deze katalysator net het zelfde fenomeen plaats. Hiervoor heeft het COK vandaag echter een oplossing beschikbaar.

AANPAK MOBILITEITSPROBLEMATIEK OP NANOSCHAALDe ontwikkelde katalysatorbehandeling zorgt voor een vergroting van de poriën met behoud van eigenschappen. In vaktermen spreekt men van het hiërarchisch maken van de katalysator. Dit maakt de actieve sites - met eigenschappen voor de chemische omzetting - binnenin de poriën toegankelijker. Visueel kan dit terug worden voorgesteld als de vrachtwagen die de stadskern wil bereiken. Voor de behandeling is er slechts één toegangsweg met onderweg een brug van 2 m hoog. De COK-ontwikkelde behandeling zijn de wegwerkzaamheden om dit mobiliteitsprobleem aan te pakken. Na de behandeling is er niet meer één toegangsweg maar meerdere, niet meer één rijstrook maar meerdere, niet meer een brug van 2 m hoog maar minimaal van 3 m hoog. Globaal is de stadskern bijgevolg niet enkel toegankelijker, maar heeft een hele capaciteitsverbreding plaatsgevonden.

PARFUMVerwacht wordt dat deze hiërarchische katalysator afvalcomponenten – zoals limoneen uit de schil van citrusvruchten – efficiënt kan omzetten naar interessantere chemicaliën. Zo draagt de citrusvrucht niet enkel bij aan het vers geperst fruitsapje. Ook het actieve bestanddeel van geneesmiddelen, de smaakcomponent in voeding als de geurcomponent in verzorgingsproducten en parfum kunnen worden gevormd. Bijgevolg kan zo’n afvalstroom letterlijk en figuurlijk het parfum van de toekomst worden. Niet enkel de vorming van geurcomponenten is mogelijk. Maar globaal het leven in onze maatschappij aangenamer maken. Denk maar aan de medicatie dat gevormd kan worden. Of aan de kauwgom met de verfrissende smaak. Maar denk zeker ook aan het niet moeten gebruiken van fossiele grondstoffen om deze chemicaliën te maken. Dit materiaal geeft de mogelijkheid tot vorming van dit alles vanuit biomassa-afgeleide afvalstromen met positief effect op milieu, klimaat, etc.

Uitgevoerde reacties op het COK tonen aan dat de behandeling zorgt voor driemaal meer chemische omzettingen. Bovendien is dit de beste katalysator ooit beschreven in de literatuur. Gelet op de eenvoud en lage kostprijs van de behandeling en het efficiënte proces achteraf, is een nieuwe stap gezet in industrialisatie.  

Deze studie kan niet concluderen dat Sinterklaas door het brengen van mandarijnen en sinaasappelen een groene heilige man is geworden. Wel maakt deze masterproef duidelijk dat technologie op nanoschaal bijdraagt tot een duurzamere wereld. De ontwikkeling van katalysatoren draagt bij tot het welslagen hiervan.
