WHY DUTCH AND BELGIAN PEOPLE SUPPORT THE PALESTINIAN CAUSE IN THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT

 

Waarom Belgen manifestaties houden ten voordele van de Palestijnen

Op 17 augustus 2014 werd er door meer dan 5000 mensen gemanifesteerd ten voordele van de Palestijnen in het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict. Daarbij was hun moto: ‘Stop de bezetting, en stop de blokkade van Gaza’.  Het was niet de eerste keer dat Belgen een nationale manifestatie organiseerden in solidariteit met de Palestijnen, eerder in juli al kwamen verschillende duizenden mensen op straat om het einde van het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict af te dwingen.

Waarom komen Belgen op voor de rechten van de Palestijnen als ze geen Moslim practici zijn of niet vanuit linkse overwegingen handelen? Geloven ze dat een betoging verandering kan teweeg brengen in een tweestrijd die al jaren aan de gang is en die bovendien zich voordoet in een land dat kilometers and kilometers verwijderd ligt van hun nationale grenzen?

Deze onderzoeksvraag die de studie was van mijn thesis is niet alleen maatschappelijk relevant, het draagt ook bij tot het begrijpen van psychologische processen die aan de basis liggen van de globale solidariteit. Nieuwe transnationale vormen van massa mobilisatie worden belangrijk in de wereld van vandaag, kijk maar naar de Ice Bucket Challenge van deze zomer. Nochtans, wordt het waarom van deze solidariteitacties te weinig bestudeerd vanuit psychologische invalshoek: wat motiveert mensen om acties te ondernemen ten voordele van een minderhedengroep die theoretisch gezien een ver-van-hun-bed-show is.

De aanleiding van mijn thesisonderzoek over Belgische en Nederlandse solidariteitsacties ten voordele van de Palestijnen was de benoeming van 2014 als ‘Internationaal jaar van solidariteit met de Palestijnse bevolking’ door de VN-veiligheidsraad. Een internationale mobilisatie zou volgens de VN kunnen bijdragen tot een openbaar dialoog over het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict en zou mogelijks schot in de zaak kunnen brengen.

In mijn thesis bestudeer ik de vreedzame solidariteitsacties van één steekproef, meer bepaald de pro-Palestijnse acties van drie non-gouvernmentele organisaties in België en Nederland en analyseer ik wat deze Belgen en Nederlanders motiveert om op te komen voor de Palestijnen. In deze steekproef onderzocht ik of de gedeelde sociale identiteit van Belgische en Nederlandse pro-Palestijnse sympatisanten en activisten vreedzame solidariteitsacties ten voordele van de Palestijnen voorspelt, gegeven dat die niet gebaseerd is op nationale of etnische achtergrond, maar op een opinie. Met andere woorden, ik onderzocht of de gedeelde sociale identiteit van pro-Palestijnse sympathisanten en activisten van een andere dan religieuze of politieke aard was en of een sociale identiteit gebaseerd op een gedeelde mening over het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict Belgen en Nederlanders motiveert om collectieve acties te organiseren voor de Palestijnen.

Aanvankelijk werd verwacht dat die gedeelde sociale identiteit gebaseerd was op groep gevoelens van gepercipieerde onrechtvaardigheid ten aanzien van de Palestijnen, zoals groepgebaseerde woede en verantwoordelijkheidsattributies ten aanzien van de Israeliërs. Dit was echter niet het geval.

Wel voorspelde het geloof in de effectiviteit en succes van een groep zijn acties (zoals het geloof in de positieve gevolgen van manifestaties) en groepsgevoelens van empathie tegenover de Palestijnse bevolking de deelname van Belgen en Nederlanders in solidariteitsacties ten aanzien van de Palestijnen.

Kortom, het geloof in de effectiviteit en het succes van een groep zijn acties te samen met gevoelens van empathie kan in een mum van tijd massamobilisatie op gang kan trekken en op die manier een ver-van-je-bed show heel dicht bij laten komen.
