De benadering van uitbuiting in de textielindustrie door bedrijven

De Belgische strijd tegen uitbuiting

Sinds het instorten van de textielfabrieken van Rana Plaza in 2013 is alle aandacht gevestigd op de kledingmerken zoals H&M, C&A en Primark. Maar wat met de Belgische modebedrijven? Nemen zij hun verantwoordelijkheid op voor het voorkomen of aan banden leggen van uitbuiting bij hun leveranciers? Dit vormde een onderwerp voor een masterproef aan de KU Leuven.

Uit onderzoek binnen de criminologische wetenschappen in Leuven blijkt dat de Belgische modebedrijven zich bewust zijn van de problematiek van uitbuiting in de textielfabrieken. Echter is de vraag of deze kennis geleid heeft tot actie. De bevraagde bedrijven geven quasi allemaal aan dat ondanks het inbouwen van garantiemogelijkheden nooit 100% uitsluiting zal zijn van uitbuiting bij hun leveranciers. Toch wordt er gestreefd naar deze zekerheid door onder andere gebruik te maken van gedragscodes. Deze zijn in de meeste gevallen gebaseerd op conventies van de Verenigde Naties. Daarnaast voeren heel wat modebedrijven audits uit. En toch kan de transparantie van de Belgische mode-industrie in vraag gesteld worden. Zo wordt er bijna niet aan rapportage gedaan. Op deze manier weet de consument niet hoe duurzaam zijn kleren zijn.

Uit dit alles blijkt dat het opnemen van verantwoordelijkheid door de Belgische modebedrijven uitgezet kan worden op een schaal. Gaande van bewust zijn van het fenomeen, maar geen verdere acties ondernemen, tot weet hebben van mogelijke uitbuiting en hun beleid steeds verder uitwerken om deze wantoestanden halt toe te roepen.

Uitbuiting binnen de textielindustrie is een zeer complex en technisch verhaal dat vervlochten is met ethiek. De Belgische modebedrijven hebben al stappen gezet naar de goede richting, maar de strijd tegen uitbuiting is nog lang niet gestreden.
