Effect of urine dilution on the biofilm formation in a MBMBR setup

Waarom waterherwinning cruciaal is voor ruimtemissies

Een permanente menselijke bewoning op Mars in 2035? Een van de knelpunten om deze doelstelling te bereiken is de beschikbaarheid van water. Water draagt voor 90% bij aan de totale massa voor een ruimtereis en een bemanning van vier personen heeft 1080 kilogram water nodig voor een missie van slechts 3 maanden. Het kost daarenboven €25.000 om 1 kilogram de ruimte in te sturen, wat het project erg duur maakt. Waterherwinning is bijgevolg de oplossing om de wateraanvoer van op aarde te verminderen.

Waterherwinning: What’s new?Waterherwinning houdt in dat behandeld afvalwater wordt hergebruikt. Dit is niet alleen voor ruimtevaartonderzoek van belang maar ook erg actueel in het kader van de waterschaarsteproblematiek op aarde. Een tweede leven geven aan water gebeurt nu ook al in Vlaanderen. Zo wordt het gezuiverde afvalwater van de rioolwaterzuiveringsinstallatie in Wulpen (Koksijde) na passage door de duinen terug gebruikt om drinkwater van te maken. Waterherwinning in de ruimte is weliswaar complexer omdat er minder afvalwater beschikbaar is. Zo wordt er momenteel urine en condensaat behandeld in het internationaal ruimtestation ISS om terug drinkwater te produceren. Deze herwinningstechnologie is gebaseerd op fysische en chemische waterbehandeling, maar dit vraagt veel energie. In de ruimte kan energie gegenereerd worden door zonnepanelen, maar die energie blijft beperkt en is essentieel voor zuurstofproductie voor de bemanningsleden. Daardoor is het noodzakelijk dat een waterherwinningsysteem voor lange afstandsmissies naar de maan of naar Mars weinig energie vereist, compact is en een hoge waterherwinningsefficiëntie heeft. De European Space Agency (ESA) heeft opdracht gegeven voor de ontwikkeling van een Water Treatment Unit Breadboard (WTUB) project, waarbij op innovatieve wijze zowel urine, douchewater en condensatievocht gezuiverd wordt voor hergebruik. Het onderzoek van WTUB vindt plaats aan de Universiteit Gent aan de faculteit bio-ingenieurswetenschappen, in samenwerking met VITO, het Vlaams Instituut voor Technologische Ontwikkeling en het ruimtevaartbedrijf Qinetiq. Deze opstelling maakt gebruik van een combinatie van biologische en fysische zuiveringstechnieken voor afvalwaterbehandeling in de ruimte en is opgebouwd uit een aaneenschakeling van drie eenheden. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van echte menselijke urine en douchewater en het gezuiverde water wordt ter plaatse opnieuw hergebruikt om mee te douchen, zodat hetzelfde water telkens hergebruikt kan worden.

 

De urine wordt in een bioreactor met nitrificerende micro-organismen behandeld om ureum, aanwezig in urine, om te zetten in nitraat dat stabiele en niet vluchtig is. Het gevormde nitraat, de fosfor en de zouten aanwezig in de urine worden daarna verwijderd met behulp van elektrodialyse. Het recupereerde water uit de urine wordt daarna samen met het douchewater verder gezuiverd met behulp membraanfiltratie-technologie: nanofiltratie en reverse osmose.

Een bioreactor voor de ruimte, uitdagingen en toekomstperspectievenDe implementatie van een bioreactor voor ruimtegebruik is een complexe onderneming. Zo hebben nitrificerende bacteriën zuurstof nodig voor de bioconversie van ureum naar nitraat. Verder is het ook cruciaal om de bacteriën efficiënt af te scheiden van het water. Dit vormt ook een grote uitdaging voor ruimtetoepassingen. In de ruimte is er immers geen zwaartekracht aanwezig, waardoor gedoseerde luchtbellen niet opstijgen in de bioreactor. Om zuurstof te voorzien aan bacteriën dient dus een ander systeem gebruikt te worden. In deze thesis werd een systeem getest om nitrificerende bacteriën te kweken op een dragermateriaal waardoor ze makkelijk te scheiden zijn van het water dat continu terug van zuurstof voorzien wordt.

In de ruimte is men genoodzaakt om alle mogelijke afvalwaterbronnen te herwinnen, ook urine. Karakteristiek aan urine is dat het een grote hoeveelheid aan ureum bevat en dat het zoutig is. Deze laatste eigenschap zorgt voor een grote stress op de nitrificerende bacteriën in de bioreactor. Groei op een dragermateriaal is van belang voor de afscheiding van bacteriën in een bioreactor, maar het zout afkomstig van urine kan ervoor zorgen dat de bacteriën op het dragermateriaal loskomen. Dit zou op termijn enorme problemen kunnen veroorzaken voor de werking van de waterzuiveringsinstallatie in de ruimte. Daarom werden in dit onderzoek enkele technieken onderzocht om gehechte groei te stimuleren in een bioreactor om zo de zoutproblematiek te omzeilen. Allereerst werd er een screening uitgevoerd om te achterhalen welke nitrificerende bacteriën best kunnen gebruikt worden voor behandeling van urine. Daarnaast werd uitspoeling en de verhouding van positief geladen deeltjes onderzocht in de bioreactor. De eerste techniek houdt in dat de reactor wordt doorspoeld waardoor bacteriën die niet op een dragermateriaal groeien worden uitgewassen. Op die manier ontstaat er een selectie van bacteriën die gehechte groei verkiezen in een zoutige omgeving. Dit onderzoek toonde aan dat uitspoeling cruciaal is voor een bioreactor die urine behandelt om bacteriële groei selectief op een dragermateriaal te stimuleren.

ToekomstmuziekDit onderzoek heeft een selectietechniek onderzocht om gehechte groei te stimuleren in bioreactoren in de ruimte, van groot belang voor afscheiding. Deze bevindingen dienen verder uitgetest worden op grotere schaal in het WTUB-project van ESA. Deze technisch-wetenschappelijke inzichten kunnen er toe bijdragen dat ruimtemissies langer kunnen worden, zodat de mens op termijn permanente missies op de maan en Mars kan uitbouwen. Dergelijke missies zijn van groot belang voor langdurige ruimte-exploratie, maar kunnen ons ook helpen op aarde om materiaalcyclussen efficiënter te sluiten.
