Grijze Muis of Icarus: Perceptiesturing en hoogmoed in het voorwoord van de jaarverslagen van vier Belgische grootbanken (2000 - 2013)

Ontduiken Belgische grootbanken hun verantwoordelijkheid?

 De voorbije jaren daverden banken wereldwijd op hun grondvesten. De traditionele grootbanken moesten niet alleen hun financiële instelling, maar ook hun imago redden. Maar wie het voorwoord van jaarverslagen van dichterbij bekijkt, merkt dat ook Belgische grootbanken hoofdzakelijk positieve resultaten toeschrijven aan zichzelf: negatieve resultaten worden maar al te graag afgeschoven op externe factoren. Een opvallende tendens die blootgelegd werd door middel van kwantitatief en kwalitatief taalonderzoek. De vier hoofdrolspelers van dit verhaal – Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING, KBC – hebben elk een eigen verleden. Toch deelt het voorwoord tot de jaarverslagen van deze grootbanken enkele opvallende gelijkenissen voor de periode 2000 – 2013. Zo hoeft het bijvoorbeeld niet te verbazen dat meer dan driekwart van de items bestempeld kan wordt als ‘goed nieuws’  of dat elk voorwoord ook financiële informatie bevat. Werd er winst of verlies geboekt, en zo ja – hoeveel? Tegelijk viel op dat deze financiële info vooral kwalitatief van aard was. Dat betekent dat slechts een derde van de financiële statements werd uitgedrukt in concrete cijfers.  Dit onderzoek identificeerde opvallende trends op het gebied van onder meer benchmarking, centrale actoren in het voorwoord en de vaak verborgen aanwezigheid van CEO's. De meest opvallende trend werd echter aangegeven door de zogenaamde 'oorzakelijke partijdigheid'.  Wie is de grote, boze wolf ‘Oorzakelijke partijdigheid’ gevonden betekent dat je geneigd bent om positieve resultaten toe te schrijven aan je eigen kunnen (positieve interne attributie), maar negatieve resultaten af te schuiven op je omgeving (negatieve externe attributie). Een fenomeen waaraan we ons allemaal wel eens schuldig maken, maar opvallend aanwezig was in alle jaarverslagen. Zo werd in de onderzochte bestanden werd meer dan 90 procent van de interne attributies bestempeld als ‘positief’, maar ongeveer 85 procent van de externe attributies beschreven als ‘negatief’. Kers op de taart? Deze droevige tendens is maximaal in financieel slechte tijden.
