‘Managing victory’: CEOs in het voetbal 

Heeft een nieuwe CEO echt een invloed op de prestaties van een voetbalclub? De voetbalkranten staan vol van clubovernames waarbij een club vervolgens ook van CEO verandert. Maar is veranderen van CEO wel een verstandige beslissing? En wat moet die nieuwe CEO dan juist doen om succesvol te zijn? Grof geld uitgeven aan grote aankopen, een nieuwe coach binnenhalen,… ? De thesis van Wouter Labro beantwoordt al deze vragen en nog veel meer.  Als CEO ben je in de voetbalwereld – na de coach – geregeld de eerste wiens ontslag geëist wordt en krijg je steevast de wind van voren als de prestaties van je club teleurstellen. In vele gevallen is de kritiek echter onterecht. Voor de gemiddelde voetballiefhebber is het een raadsel wat de CEO juist doet en hoezeer hij een invloed heeft op de prestaties van een club. Daarom bestudeert de thesis van Wouter Labro het effect van een verandering van CEO op de prestaties van voetbalclubs.  Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat veranderen van CEO geen opvallend effect heeft op de prestaties van een voetbalploeg. Kan een CEO dan helemaal geen invloed hebben op de prestaties van een club? Absoluut wel! Er zijn verschillende voorbeelden bekend van geniale CEOs die hun nieuwe club naar een hoger niveau tillen. Zo wordt bijvoorbeeld de huidige CEO van Manchester City, Ferran Soriano, geregeld geloofd voor zijn werk bij Manchester City en in dit onderzoek was het grootste verschil tussen de prestaties voor en na het veranderen van CEO meer dan 30 punten.  Daarnaast blijkt er een recept voor succes: ga voor een volledige verandering! Wanneer de CEO beslist om na zijn aanstelling ook een nieuwe coach te contracteren, doet de club het na de verandering gemiddeld 5 punten beter. Wanneer de CEO een nieuwe coach haalt én stevig investeert in nieuwe spelers, is het effect zelfs groter dan 10 punten. Opvallend is echter dat enkel investeren in nieuwe spelers geen duidelijk effect heeft op de prestaties van de ploeg.  Een andere interessante bevinding is dat de CEOs van Italiaanse clubs duidelijk de beste leerlingen van de klas zijn. Zo is het verschil tussen het aantal punten dat een club behaalt voor en na een verandering van CEO in Italië gemiddeld gezien meer dan 12 punten groter - in positieve zin- dan in Duitsland. Uit al deze bevindingen is duidelijk dat een CEO een invloed kan hebben op een voetbalploeg, maar dat dit niet vanzelfsprekend is. CEOs van voetbalclubs hebben verschillende doelstellingen en de prestatie op het veld is slechts één van die doelstellingen.
