Reservoir analogue and fluid characterization of travertine carbonate in Acquasanta Terme, Italy

Met deze filosofie heeft men voor de kust van Brazilië, in 2006, het Lula-olieveld gevonden. Het was de grootste vondst van de voorbije 30 jaar, verborgen onder 4000 meter gesteenten en 2000 meter water. Eén minpunt: het gesteente waarin de olie gevangen zit, het zogenaamde reservoirgesteente, betreft een materiaal dat nooit eerder als reservoirgesteente bestudeerd was, wat voor (on)aangename verrassingen zou kunnen zorgen.

Het reservoirgesteente waaruit het Lula-olieveld is opgebouwd is “travertijn”, dat u misschien kent als bouwsteen of van de parelwitte kalksteenterrassen nabij de warmwaterbronnen van Pamukkale in Turkije. Travertijn kan vergeleken worden met kalkaanslag dat u wel eens in een waterkoker tegenkomt maar dan op veel grotere schaal en in een natuurlijke omgeving. Het betreft dus een gesteente dat voornamelijk chemisch neerslaat uit water met een soms sterke biologische invloed.

Doordat het oliereservoir zich op 6000 meter diepte bevindt is het nagenoeg onmogelijk om de eigenschappen van het reservoirgesteente rechtstreeks te bestuderen. Daarom zoeken geologen naar het voorkomen van deze gesteenten aan het aardoppervlak, die soms meer dan 100.000 jaar oud zijn. Zo kunnen ze alle mogelijke informatie achterhalen die van belang kan zijn voor de olie-industrie. Hierbij kijkt men naar de holtes en de doorlaatbaarheid voor olie in het gesteente. Ook kan gekeken worden naar vloeistoffen die betrokken zijn in de vorming van travertijn. Dit is van belang om de “genese” van dit exotische gesteente beter te begrijpen.

Waarom deze vloeistoffen bepalen?

Door het oplossen van kalksteen in de ondergrond is het water dat verantwoordelijk is voor het vormen van travertijn rijk aan kalk. Hierbij kunnen we ons afvragen: welke kalksteen loste op? Hoe warm was het water? Waar komt het water vandaan? Door de antwoorden op deze vragen te combineren met informatie van de geologische structuur kan men meer te weten komen over de diepte dat het water bereikt heeft en door welke geologische processen het gedreven werd. Dit kan gebruikt worden door de olie-industrie. Deze kan dan in vergelijkbare geologische omgevingen, maar dan diep in de ondergrond, naar nieuwe olievelden zoeken.

Het gesteente als bibliotheek

Het bepalen van eigenschappen van water dat meer dan 100.000 jaren geleden aan het aardoppervlak is verschenen en travertijn heeft gevormd is een uitdagende taak. Onze zoektocht vond plaats in de travertijngroeves van Acquasanta Terme in Italië. In deze regio zijn travertijnafzettingen in de loop van de voorbije 100.000 jaren gevormd. In de zoektocht naar de eigenschappen van het water wordt een aparte variant van travertijn gebruikt die grote argoniet- of calcietkristallen bevat.

Informatie uit gesteentepoeder

Door het verpoederen van zulke kristallen kunnen isotopenverhoudingen van verschillende elementen bepaald worden met behulp van massaspectrometrie. Zo gebruikt men bijvoorbeeld het zwaardere zuurstofisotoop 18O dat overal in de natuur aanwezig is. De verhouding van 18O tegenover 16O in zeewater wordt hierbij als referentie gebruikt. Afwijkingen van deze referentie geven specifieke informatie, namelijk de oorsprong van het water en de temperatuur bij vorming van de kristallen. Regenwater, bijvoorbeeld, heeft in onze gebieden zeven promille (7/1000ste) minder van het zware zuurstofisotoop in vergelijking met zeewater. Bij een hogere watertemperatuur tijdens kristalvorming gaat bovendien nog minder van het zwaardere isotoop in het kristal ingebouwd worden. Een andere isotopenverhouding 87Sr/86Sr van het chemisch element strontium kan aantonen welke ouderdom de opgeloste kalksteen in de diepe ondergrond had.

Waterbelletjes in kristallen

Het water dat we bestuderen is in beperkte mate bewaard tijdens de vorming van kristallen. Het is namelijk opgeslagen in kleine holtes binnen de kristallen. Deze zijn vaak slechts 10 micrometer (1/100ste van een millimeter) groot. Het zoutgehalte en de originele temperatuur kunnen uit dit opgeslagen water, ook wel waterinsluitsels genoemd, bepaald worden door het opwarmen en afkoelen van de kristallen onder een microscoop. Tijdens het opwarmen zal een luchtbelletje dat in het waterinsluitsel zit “verdwijnen” vanaf de vloeistof dezelfde temperatuur bereikt heeft als de temperatuur waarbij de kristallen vormden (net zoals koolzuurgas opgeslagen in een gesloten fles bruiswater). Hierna wordt het kristal afgekoeld tot -120°C zodat het water bevriest. Bij het terug opwarmen wordt het smeltpunt van het water bepaald. Wanneer zout in het water is opgelost, zal de smelttemperatuur onder 0°C liggen. Dit is hetzelfde principe als het smelten van ijs waarop zout gestrooid wordt. Een lagere smelttemperatuur wijst op meer zout in het water.

De reis van het water

Na het bepalen van voorgaande eigenschappen kan de geschiedenis van het water dat de travertijn in Acquasanta Terme gevormd heeft, verteld worden. Het water vertrok als regenwater in het nabije berggebied, 20 km ten westen, aan de reis door de ondergrond. Een deel van het water had een korte reis in de ondiepe ondergrond. Het kwam in de vallei van Acquasanta Terme aan het aardoppervlak. Dit water had een laag zoutgehalte en bereikte een temperatuur van maximaal 27°C. Het andere deel van het regenwater legde een langere reis af. Het kwam terecht in breuken in gesteenten in de ondergrond waardoor het tot een diepte van wel drie kilometer kon dalen. Het water loste op deze diepte zowel zoutlagen als kalksteen op. Vervolgens werd het water naar het aardoppervlak gedreven langs breuken doordat het omgevende gesteente, en dus ook het opgesloten water, samengeperst werd door tektonische krachten. Bij het uitreden van het water aan het aardoppervlak waarbij travertijn gevormd werd, had het een temperatuur van ongeveer 65°C.

Hoewel wetenschappelijk onderzoek door de olie-industrie vaak alleen gevoerd wordt om de eigenschappen van het reservoirgesteente te bepalen, kan men op basis van dezelfde gesteenten die elders aan het aardoppervlak voorkomen bepalen welke geologische processen betrokken waren bij de vorming van het gesteente. Hierdoor kan men in de toekomst, bij het zoeken naar olie, op zoek gaan naar locaties waar de geologische omgeving aantoont dat travertijn gevormd kan zijn. En wie weet, misschien wordt hierdoor wel een nog groter olieveld ontdekt?
