VERHOGEN VAN DRAAGKRACHT VAN STUDENTEN HOGER ONDERWIJS ALS PREVENTIE TEGEN MEDICATIEGEBRUIK

Verhogen van draagkracht van studenten hoger onderwijs als preventie tegen medicatiegebruik

Studenten hoger onderwijs gebruiken kalmerende medicatie (in het bijzonder benzodiazepines zoals Alprazolam®, Loramet®, Seresta®, Stilnaze®, Temesta®, Valium®, Xanax®, …) vaak om hun angst te verminderen of om te kunnen slapen. Stimulerende medicatie (zoals Concerta®, Strattera®, Rilatine®, …) wordt het meest aangewend om langer te kunnen uitgaan en om de schoolprestaties te verbeteren. Nochtans hebben deze middelen heel wat negatieve bijwerkingen, waaronder ook een negatieve invloed op de cognitieve functies. Preventieve interventies zijn dus nodig. Hiertoe moet in kaart gebracht worden welke determinanten aan de basis van het medicatiegebr uik liggen. Deze studie gaat dit na bij een groep van 1377 hogeschoolstudenten.

In deze studie wordt, net als in internationale literatuur gevonden dat kalmerende medicatie meer door vrouwen genomen wordt en stimulerende medicatie meer door mannen. De sterkste voorspeller voor het willen nemen van medicatie is de attitude van de student ten opzichte van dergelijke medicatie. Hoe meer de student het nemen van medicatie goed, ethisch verantwoord en onschadelijk vindt, hoe meer hij geneigd is naar dergelijke medicatie te grijpen om angst te kunnen verminderen, om te kunnen slapen, om langer te kunnen uitgaan en om schoolprestaties te verbeteren. Wat anderen denken van de medicatie speelt eveneens een rol, waarbij het opvallend is dat de mening van de ouders voor de student belangrijker is wanneer het gaat om het nemen van kalmerende medicatie en de mening van de vrienden voor de student belangrijker is wanneer het gaat om het nemen van stimulerende medicatie.

Echter, uit de resultaten blijkt dat preventie zich niet enkel rechtstreeks op medicatiegebruik dient te richten maar breder moet gaan. Het ervaren van angst, depressieve gevoelens, een gebrek aan zelfvertrouwen, stress door schools presteren, stress door problemen met ouders, stress door problemen met vrienden en de ervaren workload lijken immers samen te hangen met meer gebruik van medicatie, al dan niet op voorschrift. Het lijkt dan ook belangrijk om algemeen de draagkracht van studenten te vergroten zodat ze andere en betere hulpbronnen ontwikkelen dan het grijpen naar medicatie. Dit vergroten van de draagkracht kan door studenten te ondersteunen met betrekking tot het omgaan met moeilijke situaties (coping), assertiviteit, conflicthantering, timemanagement, stresshantering, … Dit is iets waar iedere onderwijsinstelling dient in te investeren om onze studenten van vandaag op een gezonde manier te sterken om dan ook gezonde werknemers te worden.
