Van reddende engel tot anonieme buitenstaander

Hoe zouden jullie deze donor omschrijven? Welke plaats krijgt hij of zij in jullie leven? Dit zijn geen gemakkelijke vragen en toch zijn er een heleboel koppels die hierover moeten nadenken. In deze masterstudie werd onderzocht welke betekenissen koppels verlenen aan hun donor.

“Het enige dat we denken is dat het een Deen is,” zegt Denise. Hierop reageert haar man Carl verbouwereerd: “Jij dénkt dat! We weten dat helemaal niet!” “Ja…”, antwoord Denise met een zucht,  “we moeten ons toch ergens een beeld van vormen.”

Van "Ik denk hij mooie krullen heeft?" of "Zou zij een goede moeder zijn?" tot "Ik wil er eigenlijk niets over weten". Zo divers denken koppels die een beroep (moeten) doen op een donor om zwanger te worden. Dat ontdekte psychologe Marjoleine De Clercq. 

Voor haar masterproef stortte ze zich op het thema van sperma- en eiceldonatie. Brandend actueel, want de wetgeving omtrent anonimiteit van donoren is in vele landen onderwerp van discussie, ook in België (zie o.a. Petra De Sutter, senator voor Groen). 

Vaak gaat het in deze debatten om de (schijnbare) tegenstelling tussen rechten van donoren en rechten van kinderen. Anonimiteit moet worden afgeschaft in het belang van de kinderen, zo luidt het langs de ene kant. Langs de andere kant ziet men in landen waar de anonimiteit afgeschaft werd enorme wachtlijsten wegens een tekort aan donoren.

 

Maar wat met de ouders zelf?

Volgens Marjoleine De Clercq ontbreekt in deze debatten vaak echter het standpunt van de koppels die zwanger willen worden. Hoe kijken zij naar de donor en hoe denken zij na over de hele donorconceptie? 

Om dat te weten te komen, werden interviews afgenomen bij tien Vlaamse koppels die op het punt stonden te starten met een vruchtbaarheidsbehandeling in het UZ Gent of daar al  mee gestart waren. Er werd onder andere gepeild naar het beeld dat deze koppels zich vormen van de donor. Welke betekenissen verlenen ze aan hem of haar? Welke plaats krijgt de donor toegeschreven?

Het ging telkens om heteroseksuele koppels, waarbij één van beide partners onvruchtbaar is. Alle namen die gebruikt worden zijn fictief, om de anonimiteit van de koppels te bewaren.

 

Worstelen met woorden

Op basis  van een grondige wetenschappelijke analyse van de interviews werden in deze studie elf belangrijke thema’s gevonden. Terwijl de ene enorm nieuwsgierig is en de donor ziet als een mysterieuze figuur, waarover men zich allerlei dingen afvraagt, hebben anderen die nieuwsgierigheid totaal niet. Sommigen bekijken het dan weer eerder zakelijk: "Wij geven allebei bloed, dat is ongeveer hetzelfde, vind ik”, zegt Brian.

Opvallend: alle ondervraagde koppels zien de donor eerder als iemand die cellen afgeeft, waarbij het belang eerder op het gedoneerde materiaal ligt dan op de donor als persoon. Geen enkele van de koppels ziet de donor als een vader of moeder. “Gewoon iemand die een celletje afgeeft en that’s it”, zegt Andrew.

Al blijkt uit de interviews ook wel hoe sommigen de donor toch als een bedreiging beschouwen – “Voor mij is dat een beetje een bedreiging in mijn moeder zijn”, zegt Shannon – of toch minstens worstelen om de juiste woorden te vinden: “Neen, je ziet hem niet als vader. Maar allez, hoe moet ik dat nu uitleggen”, zegt Kirsten.

Tot slot ziet de meerderheid van de geïnterviewde koppels de donor als een goed persoon, iemand die een goede daad stelt en daarvoor ook dankbaarheid en respect verdient. “Dat is een goede vrouw, anders doe je zoiets niet”, zegt Paige.

Opmerkelijk is dat de verschillende betekenissen of beelden vaak samen voorkomen bij eenzelfde koppel of persoon. Het loont de moeite om verder na te denken over de spanning die ervaren wordt bij koppels bij het nadenken over de donor. Ook kan verder nagedacht worden over de mogelijke functie van de verschillende betekenissen die de koppels geven aan de donor.

 

Taboe doorbreken

Zoals reeds aangehaald is het thema van sperma- en eiceldonatie zeer actueel in binnen- en buitenland. Het is en blijft een zeer moeilijk, ethisch debat dat blijvend vragen zal oproepen. Volgens Marjoleine De Clercq kan onderzoek naar dit onderwerp beleidsmakers helpen in hun beslissingen. Het zijn de mensen die middenin procedures, zoals donatie, zitten die kunnen vertellen over hun beleving ervan en hun waarde en wensen kunnen uitspreken.

Ook vindt ze onderzoek naar dit thema belangrijk voor de algemene publieke opinie en de maatschappij als geheel. Er rust nog steeds een taboe op donatie en dat is jammer. Tot slot is er nood aan kennis over de manier waarop mensen een behandeling met donormateriaal ervaren. Op die manier kunnen zij – indien nodig – de gepaste begeleiding krijgen. “Ik hoop dat we in de toekomst meer en meer in een wereld zullen leven waarin ‘andere’ vormen van kinderen krijgen, ouderschap en opvoeding een volwaardige plaats krijgen.”

Deze masterproef kaderde binnen een groter onderzoeksproject, Parenthood Research. Dit project heeft de bedoeling om de betekenis van sociaal en genetisch ouderschap te onderzoeken bij gezinnen die via donormateriaal tot stand kwamen. Het gaat hierbij om een project waarbij verschillende wetenschapstakken binnen de UGent de handen in elkaar geslagen hebben en nodig en bruikbaar onderzoek deden.
