Integrated Pest Management of Drosophila suzukii, Monitoring, Insecticide Efficacy in Cherry and Population Modelling

Suzukii een aanstormende plaag zonder remmen

Aardbeien met slagroom, of beter nog met chocolade. Iedereen heeft ooit al wel eens van deze zoetigheid gesmuld. Maar stel je eens voor dat dit binnenkort niet meer mogelijk is. Gaan er dan geen aardbeien, kersen of druiven meer zijn? Telers stellen alles in het werk om deze vruchten te blijven produceren en Drosophila suzukii te slim af te zijn. Droso… wat? Drosophila suzukii of Aziatische fruitvlieg is een nieuwe soort fruitvlieg die zich sinds 2008 over Europa en Noord-Amerika verspreid heeft.

De Aziatische fruitvlieg (figuur 1, A) is vanuit Zuidoost-Azië via Spanje en Italië in Europa binnengekomen. Maar wat maakt deze fruitvlieg nu zo gevaarlijk voor ons rijpend fruit? De meeste fruitvliegen, waarvan Drosophila melanogaster de bekendste is, zijn zo’n drie millimeter groot en ken je zeker van rijp fruit op de keukentafel. In dit fruit kunnen deze fruitvliegen eitjes leggen. Vruchten die nog aan de boom of struik hangen zijn voor de meeste fruitvliegen veel te hard om eitjes in te leggen.

D. suzukii daarentegen, heeft een steviger ontwikkelde orgaan om eitjes te leggen (figuur 1, B) waardoor deze soort door de schil van intacte vruchten van zacht fruit kan dringen. De larven van D. suzukii beginnen dan al van de vrucht te smullen, zodat de vruchten onverkoopbaar worden. In België komt deze Aziatische fruitvlieg bijna overal voor en zorgt ze voor heel wat schade bij de telers van zacht fruit. In Italië leidde dit al tot oogstverliezen tot 40%, moest dat in België ook het geval zijn dan zou dit desastreuze gevolgen hebben. Zeker wanneer de aardbeisector in Vlaanderen alleen al goed is voor een omzet van 147 miljoen euro. Een andere grote troef van D. suzukii is de korte tijd om van ei stadium tot volwassen stadium uit te groeien, in het beste geval in acht dagen. Dit kan zo’n 15 generaties per jaar opleveren. Tel hierbij dat vrouwtjes zo’n 380 eitjes kunnen leggen in hun leven wat D. suzukii tot een geducht insect maakt.

Binnen Europa wordt het gebruik van een geïntegreerde bestrijding sterk aangemoedigd. Bij een geïntegreerde aanpak van een plaag worden alle beschikbare bestrijdingsstrategieën toegepast en gecombineerd met elkaar om op een duurzame manier tot een populatievermindering van het plaagorganisme te komen. Dit op een socio-economisch verantwoorde manier. Mogelijke bestrijdingsstrategieën zijn biologische-, fysische- en chemische bestrijding. Zo’n gecombineerde aanpak van alle beschikbare strategieën werkt beter dan wanneer men één enkele techniek toepast. Telers van zacht fruit proberen nu D. suzukii vooral via insecticiden te bestrijden om zo op voorhand de schade tot een minimum te beperken. Dit zorgt binnen de wettelijke normen voor een verhoogd gebruik van chemische middelen wat resistentie van D. suzukii in de hand werkt. Door de 15 generaties per jaar kunnen deze fruitvliegen zich gemakkelijker aanpassen en hebben de insecticiden na verloop van tijd niet veel effect meer waardoor ze niet meer gebruikt kunnen worden wanneer ze echt nodig zijn. Een ander effect van een verhoogd insecticidengebruik is dat de biologische bestrijding en andere bestrijdingsmethoden ook onder druk komen te staan.

Hoe kan de Aziatische fruitvlieg gevangen worden?

De sluitsteen bij een geïntegreerde bestrijding is de monitoring van het plaaginsect. Hierdoor kan men gerichter bestrijden met een gecombineerde strategie. Maar het huidige aanbod van monitoringsvallen en lokstoffen voor de Aziatische fruitvlieg is heel uitgebreid waardoor telers niet weten wat te kiezen. Veldproeven uitgevoerd in East Malling Research, gelegen in Groot-Brittannië, toonden aan dat de Droso Trap® (figuur 2, B), van het Belgische bedrijf Biobest, de beste val is in combinatie met drie lokstoffen geproduceerd door respectievelijk Riga, Biobest of Koppert. Verder onderzoek naar specifiekere lokstoffen is nog altijd nodig om de vallen optimaal te kunnen gebruiken in een geïntegreerde aanpak.

Helpen insecticiden wel tegen D. suzukii?

Een eerste stap van de bestrijding is het gebruik van insecticiden. In deze masterproef werd gezocht naar het beste insecticide om D. suzukii te bestrijden. Door de effectiviteit en werkingsduur van de verschillende insecticiden te bepalen kunnen de insecticiden accurater ingezet worden tegen de Aziatische fruitvlieg. Veldproeven op kersen, uitgevoerd in East Malling, toonden aan dat niet alle insecticiden even effectief waren. Zo waren er twee insecticiden die de schade van D. suzukii onder controle konden houden. Positief daarbij is dat beide insecticiden een verschillend werkingsmechanisme hebben om plaaginsecten af te doden. Ze werken op verschillende systemen van het insect waardoor de kans op resistentie ontwikkeling vermindert. Door ze af te wisselen kunnen deze twee insecticiden geïmplementeerd worden in een geïntegreerde aanpak om in combinatie met monitoring de Aziatische fruitvlieg op een effectieve manier te bestrijden.

Voorspellen wanneer telers iets kunnen doen tegen D. suzukii

Om telers van zacht fruit beter te helpen om de juiste bestrijdingstechniek te gebruiken, is er een populatiemodel ontwikkeld dat door middel van klimatologische gegevens een voorspelling doet over de populatiedynamica. Het model combineert op een unieke wijze gegevens uit de literatuur zoals o.a. levensduurcurves, ei afleg in functie van de leeftijd en eigen metingen uitgevoerd op East Malling Research, in een rekenkundig model. Het model werd gecontroleerd door middel van monitoring gegevens in Groot Brittannië waardoor er een accurate voorspelling van de populatie mogelijk is (figuur 3). Het rekenkundig model is verwerkt in software die voorspelt hoe de Aziatische fruitvlieg zich gedraagt doorheen het teeltseizoen aan de hand van klimatologische metingen. Verdere optimalisatie van het model en real-time voorspellingen moeten nog verder ontwikkeld worden alvorens de software geïmplementeerd kan worden in de geïntegreerde bestrijding van de Aziatische fruitvlieg.

Er zijn dus heel wat mogelijkheden om D. suzukii toch te slim af te zijn. Al zal een gecombineerde aanpak in de toekomst de beste oplossing zijn om nieuwe plagen in de Westerse wereld te kunnen beheersen. Verder onderzoek naar nieuwe technieken blijft nodig omdat D. suzukii zich zeer snel kan vermeerderen. Het blijft een geduchte plaag die het telers zeer moeilijk maakt om kwaliteitsvolle en verkoopbare vruchten te leveren.
