De weg kwijt naar je identiteit - De rol van opvoedingsfiguren in jongeren hun zoektocht naar hun ware ik

Generatie keuzestress: Meer dan een op de drie jongeren zit slecht in zijn vel” (Clemens, 2016). Vandaag de dag worden jongeren steeds meer overladen door allerlei keuzeopties: studeren ze verder? Blijven ze nog even thuis wonen? Reizen ze eerst? Heel wat volwassenen zien deze vrijheid als een voorrecht want vroeger hadden zij deze mogelijkheden niet. Jongeren moeten dus al hun kansen grijpen en deze ten volle benutten. Keuzes maken is echter niet meer zo vanzelfsprekend als het lijkt. De angst om niet op een keuze terug te kunnen komen of ouders teleur te stellen zijn hier illustraties van.

 

 

1. Intern kompas

Bij het maken van dergelijke keuzes is het belangrijk over een stevig intern kompas te beschikken. Jongeren zijn zich er idealiter van bewust wat er aan de basis van hun keuzes ligt. Niet enkel het onderzoeken van de verschillende keuzeopties is van belang, maar eveneens dat de keuzes overeenstemmen met hun diepere voorkeuren en interesses. Een cruciale voorwaarde hierbij is dat jongeren autonoom hun keuzeopties kunnen bekijken. Dit is van essentieel belang aangezien de omgeving het maken van keuzes vaak onrechtstreeks beïnvloedt. Vele jongeren willen anderen plezieren of zijn bang om niet aan de verwachtingen te voldoen waardoor het maken van keuzes met twijfels en druk gepaard kan gaan (Vansteenkiste & Soenens, 2015).

 

Intern kompas.  Een gezonde identiteitsontwikkeling uit zich in de opbouw van een stevig intern kompas. De jongeren kunnen aangeven wat ze belangrijk vinden en waarvoor ze willen staan. Jongeren met een stevig intern kompas hebben bovendien het gevoel dat ze zichzelf kunnen zijn, ze hoeven met andere woorden geen toneel te spelen.

 

2. De rol van opvoedingsfiguren in de ontwikkeling van het intern kompas

De vraag is hoe de ontwikkeling van het intern kompas geactiveerd en gestimuleerd kan worden. Het antwoord ligt voor een groot deel bij de opvoedingsfiguren, meer bepaald in welke mate ze de autonomie van de kinderen ondersteunen.

 

Uit voorgaand onderzoek bleek reeds dat ouderlijke autonomie-ondersteuning positief gerelateerd is aan het welbevinden van jongeren (Soenens et al., 2007). Tot voor kort verstond men onder autonomie-ondersteuning het minimaliseren van controle, het empathisch zijn en het aanbieden van keuzeopties (= de klassieke elementen). Assor (2012) breidde het begrip autonomie-ondersteuning uit. Deze uitbreiding integreerden we in het onderzoek. We onderscheidden drie autonomie-ondersteunende elementen:

  • Klassieke autonomie-ondersteuning: minimaliseren van controle, empathisch zijn en aanbieden van keuzes;
  • Rolmodel: ouders stellen zelf het gewaardeerde gedrag om aan te tonen dat het effectief waardevol en aangenaam is. Jongeren voelen zich zo niet verplicht om het gedrag over te nemen en lijken dit zelfs graag te willen;
  • Actief coachen: ouders stimuleren de jongere om een actieve, open zoektocht te voeren naar wat hij/zij echt wil en waardeert. Daarnaast is het belangrijk om de jongere te ondersteunen bij het reflecteren over diens waarden.

 

3. Onderzoek

We onderzochten bovenstaande bevindingen bij jongeren verspreid over twee scholen. Op de eerste school werden leerlingen uit het vierde, vijfde en zesde middelbaar gerekruteerd (476 leerlingen, verder adolescenten genoemd). Op de tweede school namen eerste bachelor studenten deel (195 studenten, verder jongvolwassenen genoemd).

 

Wanneer we de resultaten bekijken, onderstreept onze eerste bevinding het belang van de modelfunctie van ouders. Bij beide groepen werd aangetoond dat het als ouder van essentieel belang is om het goede voorbeeld te geven. Het is met m.a.w. belangrijk om als ouder zelf het gewaardeerde gedrag te stellen en te tonen dat je doelen nastreeft die persoonlijk waardevol zijn en mogelijks zelfs aangenaam om na te streven. Zo ontdekken jongeren dat hun vooropgestelde doelen haalbaar zijn indien ze er inspanningen voor leveren.

 

Wat betreft de modelfunctie en de actieve coaching, observeren we verschillende paden. Bij adolescenten is voornamelijk de actieve coaching van belang, terwijl bij jongvolwassenen de klassieke autonomie-ondersteuning primeert.

 

Adolescenten blijken dus meer nood te hebben aan directe sturing en begeleiding bij het zoeken naar hun doelen, waarden en interesses (= actieve coaching). Hun identiteit is volop in ontwikkeling en ze staan voor heel wat belangrijke keuzes. Het maken van dergelijke keuzes is voor hen vaak nieuw en kan met heel wat twijfels en onzekerheden gepaard gaan. Indien ouders coachen en structuur bieden, is dit positief voor het welbevinden van de jongere. De jongere voelt zich meer zelfzeker, betrokken, tevreden, verwant met de ouder en wil graag met hen vaker over dergelijke zaken praten (Mauras, Grolnick & Friendly, 2012).

 

Jongvolwassenen staan daarentegen verder in hun identiteitsontwikkeling en kunnen daardoor op een meer zelfstandige basis keuzes maken. Hierdoor kan de actieve coaching van ouders als onnodig of zelfs als bemoeizuchtig ervaren worden. Bij jongvolwassenen blijken daarentegen de klassieke elementen van autonomie-ondersteuning wel van belang. Het minimaliseren van controle, het empathisch zijn en het bieden van keuzevrijheid zijn met andere woorden positief geassocieerd met de identiteitsontwikkeling.

Het is als ouder echter afwegen op welke leeftijd het kind voldoende vertrouwen heeft om zelfstandig keuzes te maken. De ouder kan dit doen door zijn kind te vragen om bepaalde zaken samen te bespreken en door te bevragen of het kind hulp kan gebruiken bij het maken van keuzes.

 

 

4. Take home message

Het is van groot belang om als ouder consistent te zijn in het communiceren van regels en verwachtingen door zelf het goede voorbeeld te geven en te tonen dat iets intrinsiek waardevol is (= rolmodel), ongeacht de leeftijd van de jongere.

 

Als ouder van een adolescent is het daarbovenop belangrijk om een coachende rol op te nemen. Jongeren komen vaak in aanraking met sociale media, peer pressure… wat het maken van keuzes kan bemoeilijken. Het is als ouder van belang om de jongere te ondersteunen in de zoektocht naar wat hij / zij echt belangrijk vindt (= waarden en normen) en verschillende keuzeopties te bieden.

 

Deze coachende rol blijkt bij jongvolwassenen van minder belang. Het minimaliseren van controle, empathisch zijn en bieden van keuzevrijheid is daarentegen wel bevorderlijk voor jongvolwassenen hun identiteitsontwikkeling en welbevinden.
