Gaan kinderen ons van fossiele brandstoffen afhelpen?

Dat de mens zijn energiehonger moeilijk kan stillen, is geen nieuws. Ondanks de ontwikkelingen van alternatieve energiebronnen, zijn we nog steeds afhankelijk van fossiele brandstoffen. We hebben tegenwoordig zonnepanelen op onze daken en zien windmolens opduiken langs de kustlijn en snelwegen, maar dat blijkt niet voldoende. Hoe zorgen we ervoor dat de minder bekende alternatieven ook worden omarmd door de maatschappij? Kunnen kinderen ons hierbij helpen? Want fossiele brandstoffen compleet uit ons leven bannen lijkt jammer genoeg nog steeds een ver-van-mijn-bed-show.

Letterlijk: ‘GROENE’ energie

Naast de gekende alternatieve energiebronnen, zijn er ook minder bekende. Toepassingen met algen zijn hiervan een voorbeeld. Dit keer gaat het niet om de groene poedertjes die je kan kopen bij de drogist, of het zeewier dat je bij de sushi krijgt. Het gaat hier om het kweken van algen en ze daarna bewerken tot biobrandstoffen, letterlijk ‘groene’ energie dus. Dat gebeurt omdat algen hetzelfde groeimechanisme hebben als planten, namelijk: fotosynthese. Ze gebruiken CO2 als voedingsbron en zetten deze om in zuurstof om hieruit hun energie te halen. Dat komt nu net goed uit, aangezien er te veel CO2 is en bijdraagt aan de opwarming van de aarde. Doordat algen deze CO2 opnemen en omvormen tot zuurstof, zuiveren ze eigenlijk onze lucht. Op grote schaal zou dit dus enorm gunstig kunnen zijn.

De technologie om algen te gebruiken en om te vormen tot biobrandstoffen is niet nieuw. U zal zich afvragen: Waarom wordt dit dan nog niet op grote schaal toegepast? Dat komt omdat de technologie te duur is en dus economisch gezien niet kan opboksen tegen de goedkopere fossiele brandstoffen. Gelukkig blijven onderzoekers niet stilzitten en hebben ze momenteel in Canada een nieuw perspectief op de algentechnologie die het verschil kan maken voor onze toekomst.

Uit recent onderzoek in Canada blijkt dat ze ook algen kunnen gebruiken die groeien in sodameren. Deze sodameren bieden een unieke omgeving voor de algen, waardoor ze productiever zijn. De algen zijn robuuster en kunnen dus beter tegen een stootje en daarnaast groeien ze sneller en krijg je dus meer biomassa. Hoe meer biomassa je op korte tijd verkrijgt, hoe meer biobrandstoffen je kunt produceren. Op die manier wordt de productietechnologie goedkoper en op grote schaal toepasbaar. Dat is veelbelovend voor onze planeet, maar er is natuurlijk nog werk aan de winkel.

Aan de University of Calgary hebben ze de technologie bijna op punt. Dat wil zeggen dat ze het op kleine schaal ontwikkelen en daarna zullen opschalen. Als dit lukt dan ben je al heel ver zou je denken. Maar het belangrijkste aspect aan ‘innovatie’ is ook het introduceren ervan in de maatschappij. Dat blijkt niet altijd evident in een tijdperk waar we zo afhankelijk zijn van de energie uit fossiele brandstoffen. Deze markt staat namelijk sterk in haar schoenen. Het is dus belangrijk om mensen te laten inzien dat er enorme negatieve gevolgen zijn aan het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen. Daarnaast moet je ook een volwaardig alternatief kunnen bieden waar mensen voor open staan. Al deze aspecten zijn samengevat in een thesis die een onderzoek beschrijft naar het implementeren van biobrandstoffen in onze maatschappij.

Kinderen bepalen onze toekomst

Een nieuw perspectief op het introduceren van een groene technologie in de maatschappij, dat is wat er in het voorjaar van 2017 ontwikkeld is. Dit nieuwe perspectief houdt in dat de jongere generatie wordt benaderd om meer bewustzijn te creëren rond fossiele brandstoffen, hun negatieve impact en een duurzaam alternatief. De thesis beschrijft hoe je van een technologie die functioneel is op laboschaal, een aantrekkelijk schoolpakket maakt waar kinderen van kunnen leren. Er werd namelijk een bioreactor ontworpen waar de kinderen op school zelf hun algen mee konden kweken. Deze bioreactor moet je je voorstellen als een dun aquarium waarin je de algen kunt zien groeien tussen twee doorschijnende platen. De kinderen kregen controle over deze bioreactor en konden spelen met de hoeveelheid zonlicht dat de algen kregen. Ondertussen kwamen de onderzoekers langs om samen met de kinderen de algen te oogsten en weer klaar te maken voor de volgende groeisessie. Hierdoor hadden de kinderen direct contact met de onderzoekers en zagen ze hoe het is om een wetenschapper te zijn en daarbij hun steentje bij te dragen aan het milieu. Want zij waren nu verantwoordelijk voor het opvangen van CO2 en deze om te zetten naar zuurstof.

Duurzaamheid in tijd en ruimte

Aan dit onderzoek zijn enkele voordelen verbonden. Enerzijds krijgen de kinderen kennis over de materie. Anderzijds krijgen ze de kans om deze kennis praktisch toe te passen door zelf controle te hebben over de bioreactor. Maar de achterliggende boodschap is natuurlijk het bewustzijn dat zou moeten worden gecreëerd op lange termijn. Op die manier kunnen deze kinderen het sociale platform zijn waar alternatieve energietoepassingen en dus ook biobrandstoffen behoefte aan hebben. Er is zelfs een kans dat deze jongere generatie de oudere generatie prikkelt om hun gedrag te wijzigen, dit noemt men ‘reverse intergenerationele educatie’.

Het grootste voordeel aan dit project is de bundeling van drie P’s die duurzame ontwikkeling omschrijven volgens Brundtland in 1987 bij de Verenigde Naties. People, Profit, Planet, de drie termen die dit project samenvat. People: Met dit project creëren we bewustzijn bij de jongere generatie. Profit: De technologie heeft alle aspecten om competitief te worden met fossiele brandstoffen. En als laatste, Planet: De toepassing van algen en hun biobrandstoffen is een duurzame visie die de koolstofcyclus sluit.

De toekomst ligt in onze handen

De thesis toont duidelijk aan dat het eerste pilotproject op een lagere school in Canada een succes was. De kinderen gaven blijk van hun kennis en bewustzijn op deze korte termijn. Het project heeft dus alle potenties om de basis van implementatie van biobrandstoffen te zijn. En zoals de United Nations verwoordt in 2017: “Renewable energy sources could be cheaper than fossil fuels within 10 years”. Het is aan ons om de juiste keuzes te maken als deze voorhanden liggen en de kinderen gaan ons hierbij helpen. De kinderen zijn onze toekomst.
