Psychologische vatbaarheid voor radicalisering bij schoolgaande jongeren

 “Er is veel liefde en zorg nodig om mensen tot mensen te maken, en zo weinig om diezelfde mens te vernederen, te vernietigen zelfs.”

Denk jij soms wel eens terug aan de moeilijke momenten toen je worstelde met jezelf, op zoek naar zingeving of een betekenisvol doel in je leven? Herken je dat gevoel iets te willen betekenen en “iemand” te willen zijn, aanvaard te willen worden? Deze zoektocht is expliciet aanwezig vanaf de adolescentie en herkenbaar voor moslimjongeren in onze maatschappij. Frustraties, onzekerheden en gevoelens van onrechtvaardigheid zijn slechts enkele kenmerken van de psychologische vatbaarheid voor extreme opvattingen bij deze doelgroep.

 

Extremisme: een complexe maar relevante realiteit

Van documentaire-reeksen tot praatprogramma’s, van opiniestukken tot studiedagen en debatten, het onderwerp van extremisme is niet meer weg te denken. De kans is groot dat je al eens een gesprek hebt gevoerd over dit thema of dat je op z’n minst een krantenkop hebt gelezen die er naar verwees. Ook heb je je misschien eens afgevraagd hoe sommige spanningen in de maatschappij zijn kunnen ontstaan. De polarisering neemt toe naarmate aanslagen en conflicten elkaar opvolgen.

Het fenomeen van jongeren die worden geconfronteerd met extreme opvattingen is uiteraard niet opgelost nu het bolwerk van IS uit elkaar valt. Met een relatief hoog aantal Syriëstrijders zal België in de nabije toekomst worden geconfronteerd met terugkeerders. De vraag waarom jongeren deze extreme keuzes maken blijft ons achtervolgen.

Hoewel het belang van omgevingsfactoren en ideologie niet mag worden ontkend, rijst de vraag: waar blijft de belangstelling voor de voedingsbodem die de basis vormt voor het ontwikkelen van extreme opvattingen? Hoe komt het dat moslimjongeren met de meest extreme opvattingen vaak het minst religieus zijn? Waarom wordt de islam vaak als drijfveer aangeduid, terwijl verschillende onderzoeken aantonen dat een bewuste religieuze identiteit net bescherming biedt tegen radicalisering? Wat kunnen wij hieruit begrijpen in het licht van vatbaarheid voor extreme opvattingen? Welke uitdagingen komen moslimjongeren vandaag tegen tijdens hun zoektocht naar betekenisgeving?

 

Geen groei zonder vruchtbare grond

Het moeilijke klimaat waarin de jonge adolescent zijn zoektocht moet starten, wordt gekenmerkt door globalisering, polarisering en individualisering. Met de sociale media als bondgenoot kan de jongere zich tegenwoordig een (virtuele) identiteit eigen maken en selectief omgaan met informatie. Of deze vrijheid onschuldig is, blijft de vraag. “Natuurlijke filters” zoals ouders, leerkrachten en mainstream media verdwijnen meer en meer naar de achtergrond. Een tsunami aan informatie overspoelt de jongere en vergroot de kans om in aanraking te komen met uiteenlopende ideologieën.

Omdat het aanduiden van één factor als hoofdreden voor radicalisering onmogelijk is, is een holistische benadering op zijn plaats. Net zoals zaadjes vruchtbare grond nodig hebben om in te kunnen aarden, moeten ook extreme opvattingen een voedingsbodem hebben om verder te ontkiemen. Nog vóór deze gedachten diepgeworteld geraken, is het belangrijk om de psychologische vatbaarheid hiervoor in kaart te brengen. Omgevingsfactoren en extreme ideologieën kunnen immers enkel een invloed hebben wanneer er sprake is van bepaalde persoonlijke motieven.

De kernboodschap bij extremistische ideologieën richt zich vaak op emoties en de zoektocht naar betekenis. Het zwart-wit denken dat we terugzagen bij extreemrechtse protesten in Charlottesville en de oproep om zich aan te sluiten bij het kalifaat van IS, zijn voorbeelden van extreme ideeën die ons verontwaardigden. Toch zijn het deze simplistische boodschappen waar zoekende jongeren naar geneigd zijn.

 

Nieuwe resultaten, een nieuwe start?

Dit onderzoek heeft aan de hand van een vragenlijst bepaalde opvallende antwoordpatronen en denkprocessen als start van psychologische vatbaarheid voor radicalisering willen achterhalen. In totaal namen 783 jongeren, waarvan 435 moslimjongeren, uit zes scholen in Brussel en Antwerpen deel aan het onderzoek.

In tegenstelling tot wat vaak wordt gedacht hebben de meeste moslimjongeren die in aanraking komen met extremisme slechts een oppervlakkige kennis van de islam. Hierdoor hebben ze de capaciteiten niet om de authenticiteit van bepaalde interpretaties te evalueren. De groep jongeren die in dit onderzoek het meeste extreme opvattingen rapporteren zijn de jongeren die het minst religieus zijn. Bovendien voelen ze zich het meest gediscrimineerd en benadeeld en het minst geaccepteerd. Onderzoek bevestigt dat sterke, bewuste en op kennis gebaseerde religieuze beleving werkt als beschermingsfactor tegen onzekerheden en mogelijke radicalisering tijdens de adolescentie.

De complexiteit van dit maatschappelijke probleem vraagt om nuance en voorzichtigheid bij het zoeken naar oplossingen en preventie. Om uit deze moeilijkheid te geraken en te zoeken naar werkbare oplossingen is het geen slecht idee om het geweer van schouder te veranderen. Er moet sprake zijn van persoonlijke motieven en vatbaarheid opdat omgevingsfactoren een invloed zouden kunnen hebben op het vormen van extreme opvattingen.

Waarom wordt de know-how uit bepaalde islamitische landen niet geïmporteerd? Landen zoals Indonesië, Singapore en Saoedi-Arabië besteden aandacht aan de aanwezige frustraties, de verschillende religieuze interpretaties en investeren in doorgedreven rehabilitatie-programma’s.

 

Welke diverse benaderingen zijn aanwezig in het intellectuele debat over de plaats van de islam in Europa? Een theologische inmenging waarbij wordt verwacht van moslims dat ze bepaalde basisconcepten van hun geloof moeten aanpassen, kan voor problemen zorgen. Niet alleen zorgt dit ervoor dat bepaalde groepen van moslims negatief worden geviseerd, ook het gebruik van “liberale hervormers” binnen de moslimgemeenschap wordt ervaren als een manipulatie. De beleidskeuzes die nu worden gemaakt, kunnen een negatief effect hebben op moslimjongeren die op zoek zijn naar betekenisgeving. Dit uit zich dan in het zich niet geaccepteerd voelen of gevoelens van onrechtvaardigheid.

 

Laten we een beleid voeren die focust op de persoonsgebonden factoren (de voedingsbodem) en niet zo zeer alleen op de zaadjes en het klimaat.

Misschien wordt het tijd dat we meer naar de jongeren beginnen te luisteren …
