Houden onze hersenen van Afrikaanse Films ?

Al sinds de tijd van de het oude Griekenland, buigen wetenschappers zich over de vraag wat kijken naar kunst met de mens, zijn emoties en zijn hersenen doet. In de loop der eeuwen waren Aristoteles, Leonardo Da Vinci en later Heinrich Wölfflin en Ernst Gombrich allemaal gefascineerd door diezelfde vraag. Pas recent zijn we dankzij de grote vooruitgang van de medische wetenschappen in staat om echt in onze hersenen te gaan meten wat de precieze gevolgen zijn van het kijken naar en ondergaan van kunst. De jonge discipline van de neurokunstwetenschappen was daarmee geboren en begon initieel met het bestuderen van de interactie tussen schilderijen en ons menselijk brein. Naderhand kwam daar film bij, een kunstvorm die zich bij uitstek leent om de interactieve uitwisseling tussen kijker en kunstwerk te gaan meten met behulp van hersenscanners.

Al snel bleek uit onderzoek dat we een voorkeur hebben voor het kijken naar bepaalde patronen en voor het reproduceren van die patronen in visuele kunst. Over de hele wereld blijken die patronen min of meer dezelfde, maar er zijn ook culturele verschillen: bepaalde soorten patronen in het gebruik van ruimte en tijd in films, blijken niet allen verklaard te kunnen worden door wederzijdse beïnvloeding.

Deze thesis bekijkt specifiek de manier waarop de filmtaal zich ontwikkelde op het Afrikaanse continent en bekijkt in detail de meer specifieke patronen daarin en de manier waarop we die kunnen begrijpen en lezen aan de hand van de nieuwe bevindingen die de neurokunstwetenschap ons aanreikt.

Antropologische cinema en de Afrikaanse film.

De Afrikaanse cinema ontwikkelde zich vooral in het noorden van het continent en dat pas echt vanaf de helft van de twintigste eeuw. Om de specifieke filmtaal van het continent te bekijken, is het eerste nodig te onderzoeken hoe deze zich ontwikkelde. Daarin speelden cineasten die antropologische films draaiden een grote rol. De eerste generatie Afrikaanse filmmakers, werd sterk beïnvloed door mensen als Jean Rouch of de Belg Luc de Heusch, die de nieuwe modernistische ideeën die broeiden in de Europese filmwereld – Het Italiaanse ‘neo-realisme’ en de Franse ‘nouvelle vague’ – integreerden in hun etnografische films en daarmee voor een revolutie tekenden. Die nieuwe vormtaal werd gretig opgepikt door autochtone Afrikaanse cineasten, die er een eigen cinema op bouwden. Aan de hand van het werk van twee vooraanstaande pioniers – Youssef Chahine in Egypte en Ousmane Sembene in Senegal – wordt deze historische context kort geschetst.

 

Tijd en Ruimte in de film- en andere kunsten

Het herkennen van specifieke patronen in het gebruik van tijd en ruimte en een onderscheid te kunnen maken tussen die die specifiek toebehoren aan de Afrikaanse (film)kunst en die die gegroeid zijn uit de invloeden en uitwisselingen, is geen gemakkelijke opdracht. Eerst moet er al vastgesteld worden hoe die patronen precies werken. Daarvoor ga ik ten rade bij Gilles Deleuze, die twee uiterst belangrijke werken schreef over hoe tijd en ruimte gebruikt worden in de wereld van de film. Een tweede raadgever is het werk van Michael J. Witzel. Witzel spendeerde twintig jaar van zijn leven om het boek ‘The Origins of the World’s Mythologies’ (‘De oorsprong van de Wereldmythologieën’) te schrijven. In dat boek onderzoekt hij alle mogelijke mythes uit alle hoeken van de wereld en gaat op zoek naar hun oudste vormen en de patronen die hen uniek maken voor een bepaalde cultuur en welke gebaseerd zijn op uitwisseling en wederzijdse beïnvloeding. Door Deleuze en Witzel samen te brengen en hen aan te vullen met werk van vooraanstaande experts op het vlak van Afrikaanse film zoals Melissa Thackway, probeert de thesis vervolgens een aantal specifieke Afrikaanse filmpatronen te onderscheiden.

Film en onze hersenen

De laatste sprong om te nemen is dan om dat alles eindelijk te linken aan de neurokunstwetenschappen. Gewapend met de inzichten van enkele van de (weinige) vooraanstaande auteurs die reeds baanbrekend werk leverden op dit vlak, komt de tekst tot de eindconclusie dat net zoals bij andere visuele kunsten ook bij film de voorkeur voor kijken naar bepaalde beelden/patronen en het steeds opnieuw maken ervan een combinatie is van universele (voor de mens dan toch) en cultuurspecifieke elementen. We beschikken allemaal over dezelfde ‘mechaniek’ in onze hersenen, maar de omgeving en cultuur waarin we opgroeien zorgt er al gauw voor dat we – althans wat visuele kunst betreft – een aantal voorkeuren ontwikkelen die ons onderscheiden van wat op andere plaatsen gebeurt.

Dat we inzicht krijgen in de manier waarop dit alles werkt, kan ons interessante modellen opleveren om visuele kunsten uit de hele wereld beter met elkaar te gaan vergelijken. Omdat we nog maar pas onze eerste stappen zetten in deze neurokunstwetenschappen is dit een grote uitdaging, waarvan we nog niet helemaal weten hoe we ze best aanpakken, laat staan dat we weten waartoe dit alles zal leiden.
