Nieuwsconsumptie en de responses op terrorisme

Onderzoek legt rol van nieuwsmedia in het creëren van angst bloot

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek in het kader van de masterproef van Lennart Tobback aan de KU Leuven heeft een verband aangetoond tussen de consumptie van nieuws en de angst voor terrorisme en een tweede, meer overdreven respons, namelijk het catastroferen van terrorisme. Die responses lokken op hun beurt dan weer een negatievere houding uit ten opzichte van moslims en vluchtelingen. Deze bevindingen werpen de vraag op op welke manier nieuwsmedia vandaag de dag hun maatschappelijke rol uitoefenen en of de verspreiding van angst tot die rol behoort. Binnenkort verschijnt het onderzoek in het tijdschrift voor communicatiewetenschap.

Het onderzoek vond de afgelopen maanden plaats bij iets meer dan 700 deelnemers van 16 tot 30 jaar oud in Vlaanderen. Die specifieke leeftijdscategorie geeft de studie de mogelijkheid om concretere uitspraken te doen over die groep mensen. Het enorme aantal deelnemers werd verzameld door het langsgaan bij enkele moedwillige scholen, jeugdorganisaties, sportclubs, … over gans Vlaanderen die hun leden ter beschikking stelden. De participanten kregen een survey voorgeschoteld van om en bij de 40 minuten. Door die uitgebreide survey en steekproef heeft de onderzoeker een zeer waardevolle dataset bij elkaar gesprokkeld, waarmee hij aan de slag is gegaan.

Zoals hierboven beschreven werd werd er in de eerste plaats na gegaan in welke mate terrorismenieuwsconsumptie voor een hogere angst en catastroficatie van terrorisme zorgt. Die laatstgenoemde is een relatief nieuw concept dat nog niet vaak onderzocht werd. In een tweede deel van de studie werd bekeken of die angst en catastroficatie een negatievere houding ten opzichte van moslims enerzijds en vluchtelingen anderzijds uitlokt. In een derde deel werd nagetrokken of de angst en catastroficatie als mediator optreedt in de relatie tussen nieuwsconsumptie en de houding tussen vluchtelingen en moslims.

Uit de analyse data zijn heel wat interessante en opvallende zaken af te leiden. Zo stelde de communicatiewetenschapper in spe vast dat er een significant verschil is tussen mannen en vrouwen in de twee responses als gevolg van terrorisme. Zo rapporteren vrouwen een significant hogere angst en overdreven respons dan mannen. Terrorismenieuwsconsumptie via sociaalnetwerksite Facebook zorgt voor een significante hogere angst, bij zowel mannen als vrouwen. Belangrijker is evenwel dat de algemene nieuwsconsumptie over vijf verschillende media heen, een overdreven respons – het catastroferen van terrorisme – induceert. Hoe meer een individu nieuws over terrorisme consumeert, hoe meer men terrorisme zal gaan dramatiseren. Die angst en overdreven respons zorgen op hun beurt dan weer voor een negatievere houding ten opzichte van moslims enerzijds en vluchtelingen in het algemeen anderzijds. Er werd evenwel geen relatie gevonden tussen de nieuwsconsumptie en de attitude ten opzichte van moslims en vluchtelingen. Wel werd er een indirect effect gevonden van nieuwsconsumptie op de attitudes.

Na analyse van de resultaten blijkt dat nieuwsmedia door te berichtgeven over terroristische gebeurtenissen angst en een tweede, meer overdreven respons uitlokken. Bovendien zorgen die responses voor een negatievere houding ten opzichte van moslims en vluchtelingen. De maatschappelijke rol van nieuwsmedia als informatieverstrekker in het publieke debat kan hierdoor in vraag worden gesteld. Het verspreiden van angst en daardoor het uitlokken van een negatievere houding ten opzichte van twee belangrijke groepen in de Belgische samenleving, lijkt niet tot die rol te behoren. Een verklaring kan gezocht worden in de focus op de commerciële belangen bij nieusmedia. Sensationele berichtgeving zorgt voor meer aandacht en uiteindelijk een grotere verkoop, maar induceert ook angst bij ontvangers. Dit onderzoek draagt bij tot het debat dat momenteel heerst over de manier waarop nieuwsmedia over terrorisme verslaggeven en de gevolgen ervan. Maatschappij en politiek dienen zich bewust te zijn van de gevolgen van het verspreiden van berichten over terrorisme.
