Wat hebben Aladdin, Plato en Oscar Wilde met elkaar gemeen?

Op het eerste gezicht niet veel, zou je denken. Richard Burton bedacht op het einde van de negentiende eeuw de ‘sotadische zone’. Binnen deze zone zou homoseksualiteit welig getierd hebben, terwijl het erbuiten “gelukkig” niet voorkwam. Zijn tekst was het eerste Engelstalige geschrift waarin de liefde tussen mannen publiekelijk zo expliciet aan bod kwam. In een samenleving die openlijk vijandig was tegenover mannenliefde moest Burton voorzichtig omspringen met het onderwerp.

 

HOMOHAAT

Het is 2018. Het hele jaar door worden de kranten gedomineerd door één thema. Dit jaar zakken de Rode Duivels namelijk af naar Rusland voor het WK voetbal waar 32 landen zullen deelnemen. In het kielzorg van de spelers worden honderdduizenden supporters verwacht. Niet iedereen lijkt echter even welkom. Russische hooligans hebben namelijk een waarschuwing voor elke holebi die het aandurft om naar hun land af te zakken: “Jullie zullen worden neergestoken en uitgeroeid”. Ik herhaal: het is 2018. Nog te vaak worden we geconfronteerd met berichten van onverdraagzaamheid en discriminatie ten opzichte van homoseksuelen.

 

EERSTE STAPPEN NAAR EMANCIPATIE: Groot-Brittannië

De laatste 50 jaar zijn er grote stappen gezet door de homo-emancipatiebeweging. Vooral op legaal gebied. In de meeste landen is de liefde tussen twee mannen niet langer strafbaar. Het was ooit anders. De eerste stappen van deze homo-emancipatie werden in de negentiende eeuw gezet. Deze eeuw werd in Groot-Brittannië gekenmerkt door een sociale, legale en religieuze afkeer tegenover mannenliefde. In 1885 werd er zelfs een nieuwe wet afgevaardigd die homoseksualiteit strafbaar maakte. Oscar Wilde zou er uiteindelijk door in de gevangenis terechtkomen. De Victoriaanse periode in Groot-Brittannië (ca. 1837-1910) was er één vol tegenstellingen. Ook op het gebied van seks. Enerzijds werd over alles wat met seksualiteit te maken had gezwegen, anderzijds bestond er een zekere obsessie rond het taboe van seks.

 

ROL OUDHEID

In deze historische context ontstonden debatten rond de identiteitsvorming van homoseksuelen. Schrijvers, dichters en wetenschappers – van wie meerderen zelf aangetrokken waren tot mannen –  hadden naast vast te stellen wat het nu betekende om op mannen te vallen tot belangrijkste bedoeling het aangepast krijgen van de anti-homowetten. Hierbij speelde de oudheid een belangrijke rol. Doorheen de hele geschiedenis bleven de Griekse en Romeinse cultuur belangrijke voorbeelden. In hun oude teksten werd vaak gezocht naar antwoorden voor nieuwe problemen. Zo ook in het geval van homoseksualiteit. In het bijzonder in de teksten van Plato vonden deze pioniers nuttige passages om aan te tonen dat de liefde tussen twee mannen ‘natuurlijk’ was en daarom niet meer of minder strafbaar dan ‘gewone’ heteroseksualiteit.

 

RICHARD BURTON

Richard Burton (1821-1890) was één van de pioniers in het doorbreken van het homotaboe in Engeland in de negentiende eeuw. De man die bekend stond als ontdekkingsreiziger bracht in zijn jonge jaren onbekende landen en continenten in kaart. Op zijn oude dag wenste hij aan zijn landgenoten een ander onbekend gebied onthullen: oosterse seksualiteit. Hij hekelde de preutsheid en hypocrisie op het gebied van seks van zijn eigen samenleving. Daarom wenste hij zijn tijdgenoten vertrouwd te maken met voorbeelden van hoe het wél moest.
Dit deed hij door middel van de vertaling van enkele Indische en Arabische klassieker, waaronder de Kama Sutra. Zijn bekendste vertaling was echter die van de Arabian Nights, de ‘Duizend-en-één-nachten’, die ons Ali Baba en de veertig rovers, Sinbad de zeeman en Aladdin schonken. Op het einde van zijn vertaling voegde hij een nabespreking toe waarin hij enkele ‘typisch Arabische’ fenomenen besprak. Naast de Islam ook homoseksualiteit. Zijn hoofdstuk over mannenliefde betekende het eerste Engelstalige geschrift dat voor een breed publiek gepubliceerd werd.

 

SOTADISCHE ZONE" "

In dit hoofdstuk beschreef Burton zijn visie op homoseksualiteit. Volgens hem bestond er een ‘sotadische zone’, genoemd naar de Griekse dichter Sotades uit de derde eeuw voor Christus. Binnen deze zone zou homoseksualiteit voorkomen. Buiten deze zone kwam het “gelukkig” niet voor. Het klimaat in deze delen van de wereld zou invloed hebben op iemands geaardheid. Warmere gebieden zouden ‘losbandigheid’ als het ware in de hand werken.
Op het eerste gezicht lijkt Burton dan ook erg negatief over mannenliefde. Zijn tekst bevat echter een dubbele bodem. Wie voorbij de codes kan lezen die Burton in zijn tekst verwerkte, merkt op dat zijn visie juist positief was. Veel van de codes die hij hanteert, blijken uit de Griekse oudheid te stammen, evenals aspecten van Burtons pseudo-wetenschappelijke visie op homoseksualiteit.
Wat ook meteen opvalt is het feit dat West-Europa, de eigen gebieden, niet tot de zone behoren. Burton maakt (voor zijn eigen veiligheid) een onderscheid tussen het ‘Westen’ en het ‘Oosten’. Het Oosten was al sinds de oudheid een plaats waar men op een ‘zondige’ manier met seks omging. Opvallend is ook dat Griekenland tot deze zone behoorde. Door Griekenland in de oosterse traditie te plaatsen, kwam Burton in conflict met andere pioniers die net wezen op het feit dat Griekenland de archetypisch westerse voorvader was van de Europese culturen.
Is het trouwens niet vreemd dat zowel Canada als Mexico tot de zone behoren? De klimaten van deze gebieden verschillen toch enorm van elkaar? Gezien warmte een belangrijke factor was in Burtons theorie over homoseksualiteit lijkt het vreemd dat hij Canada in de zone opnam, maar Afrika en Indië bijvoorbeeld niet.

 

 

De eerste stappen werden in de negentiende eeuw gezet, vandaag zijn we al aanzienlijk gevorderd, maar de eindbestemming van de tocht naar sociale aanvaarding is nog niet in zicht. Daarom blijft het thema van de homo-emancipatie (jammer genoeg) relevant. De negentiende-eeuwse homoseksualiteit biedt een mooie (en relevante) gevalstudie van hoe in latere tijden werd omgegaan met de erfenis van de klassieke oudheid. Aan de Grieken en de Romeinen wordt nog steeds een zeker gezag gegeven. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan Bart De Wever die te pas en te onpas een Latijns citaat de wereld ingooit. Het maakt van de receptiestudies (die dit gebruik/misbruik van de klassieke oudheid bestudeert) een boeiende, opkomende tak van geschiedenis als onderzoeksgebied.
