Instagram influencers en luxe: De modererende impact van congruentie op de effectiviteit van merkprominentie

Instagramfeed of reclamespotje?

Een meisje met een mooie outfit aan en een dure tas duidelijk in beeld. Dit is wat je gewoonlijks ziet als je door jouw Instagramfeed scrollt. Wanneer je de foto beter bekijkt zul je echter zien dat het merk van de tas zeer subtiel of juist heel prominent aanwezig is in de foto en meestal ook nog eens wordt vermeld in een onderschrift. Toch geen gewone foto, maar één met een onderliggende boodschap.

Iedereen kent het wel, je begint te scrollen door de startpagina van jouw Instagram en in nog geen minuut ben je zeker al 10 advertenties gepasseerd zonder dat je het beseft. Chiara Ferragni, Sofie Valkiers, Negin Mirsalehi. Dit zijn namen die elke fervente Instagramgebruiker vast en zeker kent. Instagram influencers zijn de dag van vandaag niet meer weg te denken uit sociale media, maar vooral niet uit de advertentiewereld. Ze vertegenwoordigen elke dag luxemerken door een ideaalbeeld te posten op Instagram. Zo zijn ze vaak bekend geworden bij het publiek enkel en alleen door hun Instagramaccount.

Achter elk van hun posts schuilen echter wel persuasieve marketingtechnieken die bedoeld zijn om hun volgers tot kopen aan te zetten. Deze consumenten zijn zich vaak niet van bewust van de reclame op Instagram omdat het zich net in een niet-commerciële setting afspeelt. De groeiende mogelijkheid voor de consument om reclame te vermijden zette adverteerders aan om nieuwe manieren te zoeken om hun product of merk te promoten. Door de grote populariteit van influencers staan alle merken te popelen om met hen samen te werken. Het kan hen namelijk een enorm bereik opleveren.

Merkprominentie

Wanneer er dieper wordt ingegaan op deze Instagramposts zien we dat het merk niet in elke foto hetzelfde in beeld wordt gebracht. Dit alles heeft een effect op hoe de consument dit verwerkt en er vervolgens op reageert. Merkprominentie speelt een grote rol om de intenties van de consument positief te gaan beïnvloeden. Prominentie is de aanwezigheid van het merk in de Instagrampost. Een prominente plaatsing, waarbij het merk zeer duidelijk aanwezig is in de foto, trekt de aandacht naar zich toe. Hierdoor wordt het merk achterna sneller herkend door de consumenten. Zowel bij een prominente plaatsing van het merk en een subtiele plaatsing in de foto zullen de volgers zich het merk even goed herinneren nadien. Dit kan komen doordat er niet veel scepticisme bestaat rond reclame bij influencers en men zich ook mogelijks niet zal verzetten tegen de beïnvloeding ervan Er wordt met andere woorden niet nagedacht over mogelijke reclame in de Instagrampost.

Is dit reclame?

Echter wekt een prominente plaatsing eerder reclameherkenning op. Dit zorgt voor een grotere reclamewijsheid. Dit implementeert dat men zich bewust is van de verkoopintentie van de influencer. Vervolgens kan dit negatief zijn voor de merkattitude, omdat men deze beïnvloeding van reclame eerder wil vermijden, maar binnen dit onderzoek blijkt dat dit niet zo is. Er heerst een laag scepticisme bij influencers. Ze weten wel dat ze hen proberen te beïnvloeden en herkennen reclame, maar zullen niet meteen hun attitude tegenover het merk veranderen. Er is een grote identificatie met influencers en hierdoor staan ze positief tegenover deze influencer. Ze zullen mogelijks de merkattitude niet aanpassen naar een negatief beeld om zo een balans te houden met de positieve attitude tegenover de influencer.

Brand fit

Verder is congruentie een belangrijke factor is binnen influencer marketing. Het gaat hier om een ‘fit’ tussen de influencer en het merk dat wordt geadverteerd. Met andere woorden betekent congruentie dat het merk, dat de influencer promoot op zijn of haar Instagram, past bij deze persoon. Zo kan congruentie betekenen dat Kayla Itsines, de bekende personal trainer, een merk van sportkledij promoot op Instagram. Incongruentie komt voor wanneer ze een samenwerking zou aangaan met de fastfoodketen McDonalds. Congruentie kan er namelijk voor zorgen dat het negatieve effect van de prominente aanwezigheid van het merk in de foto wordt omgekeerd naar een positief effect op de consument.

Je zou denken dat de merkherkenning groter is bij een incongruente post waarbij het merk prominent in beeld komt, doordat het merk opvalt, omdat het eerst en vooral niet passend is en het daarbovenop nog eens prominent in het beeld aanwezig is. Echter wordt het merk het meeste herkend in een congruente post met een prominente plaatsing. Dit kan hier mogelijks worden verklaard doordat deze beter verwerkt wordt omdat het natuurlijk aanvoelt. Terwijl consumenten zich bij incongruentie eerder zullen verzetten tegen de beïnvloeding ervan en vervolgens de boodschap minder goed verwerken. De reclameherkenning is het hoogst bij incongruentie met een prominente plaatsing, omdat de focus op het merk ligt en zo reclame sneller herkend wordt. De reclameherkenning zorgt voor reclamewijsheid, zoals eerder al vermeld, maar niet voor een verandering in attitude, mogelijks door het afblokken van de beïnvloeding door reclame.

Met deze belangrijke factor, verwachten we dat een brand fit ervoor zorgt dat er een positief effect is van een prominente plaatsing op zowel merkattitude en aankoopintentie en bij incongruentie een negatief effect. Voor merkattitude hierop geen verschil gevonden. Dit kan opnieuw mogelijks te wijten zijn aan het identificatieproces. Voor de aankoopintentie kan echter wel worden gesteld dat deze het hoogst is bij congruentie met een subtiele plaatsing. Doordat de reclame hier het minste opvalt en consumenten niet meteen sceptisch zijn over mogelijke beïnvloeding door reclame, zullen ze eerder geneigd zijn om het product aan te kopen. Eigenlijk is de aankoopintentie van consumenten het hoogst bij de Instagrampost waarvan het merk het minst in de aandacht wordt gezet.

 

Er kan worden geconcludeerd dat influencers die met een congruent merk samenwerken minder snel reclameherkenning triggeren. Doordat er echter niet kan worden gesteld dat reclamewijsheid leidt tot een positieve merkattitude, is het van belang om het merk subtiel in beeld te brengen. De aankoopintentie is hier namelijk het hoogst en bovendien zal de reclamewijsheid minder snel worden geactiveerd door de mindere reclameherkenning. Wanneer je nu verder scrollt op jouw Instagramfeed, zal je waarschijnlijk nog onbewust 10 advertenties tegenkomen, maar zal de onderliggende boodschap vast en zeker duidelijk zijn.
