Babybillen

Pampers houden dagelijks de billen droog van honderdduizenden baby’s. Dat doen ze door gebruik te maken van superabsorberende polymeren. Deze polymeren kunnen tot wel duizendmaal hun eigen massa in water opnemen. Wanneer ze worden toegevoegd aan beton, maken ze die in veel gevallen duurzamer en in sommige gevallen zelfs sterker.

Superabsorberende watte?!

Superabsorberende polymeren zijn lange kettingen van een of meer kenmerkende moleculen en hebben een veelvoud aan vertakkingen en aaneenschakelingen. Zo lijken ze, wat hun structuur betreft, op sponzen. Aan de binnenkant van die structuur heerst een aantrekkingskracht die watermoleculen aanzuigt. De polymeren zwellen op tot wanneer hun maximale volume bereikt is. Dat is afhankelijk van het elastisch vermogen van de molecule die net als een elastiekje de uitrekking probeert tegen te gaan.

Beton krimpt

Beton wordt wel eens vloeibare steen genoemd. Het is niet meer weg te denken uit de moderne bouwnijverheid. Het mengsel van cement, zand, kiezels en water heeft veranderende eigenschappen in de tijd, die het net zo aantrekkelijk maken. In verse, onverharde toestand kan beton gebruikt worden voor het vullen van mallen met een alternatieve vorm. Het water zal na verloop van tijd reageren met de cementdeeltjes om hechte bindingen te vormen. Al na enkele uren kan het beton draagkrachtig zijn.

De chemische reactie met water leidt tot een verharde structuur met een kleiner volume. Daarnaast kan ongebonden water verloren gaan aan de omgeving door luchtverplaatsing over het betonoppervlak of door een te hoge buitentemperatuur. Dit alles zorgt ervoor dat het beton krimpt.

So what?

Wanneer beton niet vrij kan vervormen onder invloed van krimp, bij voorbeeld doordat het vastgehecht is aan een aangrenzende structuur, kunnen scheuren optreden. Die scheuren hebben natuurlijk een vernietigend effect op de sterkte van het beton. Ook de duurzaamheid zal hieronder lijden aangezien scheuren de toegang bieden tot mogelijks aantastende stoffen van buitenaf.

Door superabsorberende polymeren toe te voegen aan het betonmengsel kan krimp voor een groot deel tegengewerkt worden. De polymeren vormen als het ware opslagplaatsen voor water verspreid over het betonvolume. Ze zijn in staat het opgeslagen water geleidelijk aan af te geven aan het naburige verhardende beton, dat water nodig heeft bij de chemische reactie of het verliest aan de omgeving.

3D printen van gebouwen

Additieve productie van voorwerpen, waarvan 3D printen de bekendste methode vormt, is ín. Het verhoogt de vrijheid in vormgeving en zorgt voor een vermindering in menselijke tussenkomst, wat het bouwproces goedkoper maakt dan de traditionele tegenhangers. Reeds talrijke voorbeelden van in beton 3D geprinte modules en zelfs gebouwen zijn te vinden over de hele wereld.

Tegengestelde eisen

Om beton te kunnen 3D printen, zijn tegengestelde materiaaleigenschappen vereist. Zo dient het betonmengsel aanvankelijk goed vloeibaar en van een degelijke samenhang te zijn om de verpompbaarheid in de machine te garanderen. Eenmaal het mengsel uit de printer komt, mag het geen grote onnauwkeurigheden bevatten aan het buitenopper-vlak. Bovendien mag de geprinte laag niet meer van vorm veranderen. Het betonmengsel moet dus vloeibaar zijn maar ook niet te vloeibaar.

Wanneer een volgende laag wordt geprint op een voorgaande, dient het mengsel nog steeds even vloeibaar te zijn. Echter, de tijd tussen het printen van opeenvolgende lagen moet ook voldoende zijn om de voorgaande laag genoeg draagkracht te geven. Het betonmengsel moet dus traag verharden maar ook niet te traag.

Deze tegengestelde eisen aan materiaaleigenschappen bemoeilijken het ontwerp van de samenstelling evenals de volgorde van het proces.

Een ketting is zo sterk als de zwakste schakel

De binding tussen twee opeenvolgende geprinte lagen is van cruciaal belang voor de sterkte van het geheel. In het bijzonder gaat het hier over de treksterkte van de binding en niet over de druksterkte. Onder druk worden de lagen immers bij elkaar gehouden, in trek is dat niet het geval.

Eén van de invloed hebbende parameters is de vochtigheid van het tussenoppervlak, of anders gezegd: de versheid van het contactvlak tussen twee lagen. Door superabsorberende polymeren toe te voegen aan het betonmengsel, blijft dat langer vers en bijgevolg is er een groter tijdsraam waarin beide lagen optimaal kunnen binden. Wanneer twee lagen meteen na elkaar geprint worden, blijft het voordelig effect van de superabsorberende polymeren echter uit.

Daarnaast is ook de kwaliteit van het buitenopper-vlak van de geprinte lagen van belang. Wanneer dat te ruw is bij voorbeeld, kan dat leiden tot luchtbellen gevangen aan het contactvlak. Die verminderen de treksterkte aanzienlijk maar de druksterkte niet zo uitgesproken.

Liquido corrupta

Water is een essentieel bestanddeel van het beton-mengsel maar een teveel aan water doet de sterkte afnemen. Dit werd reeds opgemerkt door de beroemde Romeinse ingenieur en architect Vitruvius in zijn ‘De Architectura.’ Aan de andere kant zorgt te weinig water voor een moeilijk te verwerken specie. Superabsorberende polymeren maken het mogelijk extra water toe te voegen dat de sterkte niet ten koste komt. Ze houden het water immers zelf vast en geven het maar geleidelijk af. Hun controlerende werking op de interne vochtigheid van de betonmassa belooft veel goeds voor de toekomst van 3D geprinte betonelementen.
