Brandend ijs: een nieuwe energiebron?

Dat we af moeten van fossiele brandstoffen, zou niemand meer mogen zijn ontgaan. Verbranden van diesel, benzine of steenkool zorgt voor tonnen koolstofdioxide in de atmosfeer, die daar zorgen voor de opwarming van de aarde. De vraag is – hoe lossen we dat op? Enerzijds hangt alles wat we doen en maken af van de energie die we met die fossiele brandstoffen opwekken, en anderzijds investeren we nog te weinig in het gebruik van alternatieve, hernieuwbare energiebronnen, zoals zonlicht en wind.

Volgens sommige onderzoekers en Vladimir Putin bestaat er een tussenfase. Dit is een brug tussen onze huidige afhankelijkheid van aardolie en onze gedroomde duurzame samenleving op basis van louter hernieuwbare energie: aardgas. Voor Putin meer bepaald Russisch aardgas. Die evolutie is al aan de gang, en aardgas zal zo wellicht tegen 2030 de fakkel overnemen van aardolie als dominante brandstof in onze samenleving. Vooral in de scheepvaart, die nog het meeste werk voor de boeg heeft om op hernieuwbare energie over te stappen, is aardgas (of LNG, zoals dat dan met een technische term heet) een interessant product: aardgas brandt schoner (er komen minder schadelijke bijproducten vrij bij het gebruik, zoals roetdeeltjes of zwaveldioxide), er zijn nog voldoende voorraden beschikbaar en de technologie die vandaag de dag al schepen voortstuwt, kan eenvoudig overschakelen op dit gas. Anderzijds moeten we er wel voor zorgen dat het gas niet ontsnapt: aardgas bestaat haast uitsluitend uit methaan, en deze zogenoemde methaanslip zorgt ook voor de opwarming van onze planeet (en zelfs tientallen malen sterker dan koolstofdioxide).

Een onverwachte bron van methaan in de diepzee

Recent viel het oog van de maritieme wereld op een interessant product dat gewonnen kan worden van onder de zeebodem: methaanhydraten. Dit zijn chemische structuren waarin methaangas gevangenzit in een netwerk van watermoleculen. Ze lijken op het eerste gezicht op ijskristallen, maar als het methaan eruit vrijkomt, kan deze ontbranden. Brandend ijs, dus. In die hydraten zit er per volume tot 160 keer meer methaan dan in gewoon aardgas, en ze ontstaan bij lage temperaturen (0-20 °C) en hoge drukken (minstens twintigmaal de luchtdruk). Het grootste deel van deze hydraten zit wijd verspreid onder de zeebodem, maar hier en daar komen er grote geconcentreerde hoeveelheden voor, die dus ook makkelijk te ontginnen zijn. Er is bovendien ontzettend veel: de totale hoeveelheid koolstof die in die methaanhydraten opgeslagen zit, is wellicht het dubbele van de koolstof in de bekende fossiele brandstoffen. Een ideale brandstof voor de scheepvaart, dus. Methaanhydraten kunnen een belangrijke rol spelen het hierboven beschreven tussenfase, zowel als een bron van aardgas als een manier om aardgas te transporteren.

Anderzijds zijn er ook nadelen verbonden aan het gebruik van deze methaanbron. De hydraten zijn namelijk enkel stabiel bij die hoge drukken en verliezen hun samenhang zodra men het gas bovenhaalt. Een korte opslagperiode van aardgas in de vorm van hydraten is mogelijk (bijvoorbeeld in het ruim van een transportschip), bij atmosferische druk en bij -20 °C. Dit is enkel voordeliger dan andere transportmethoden van aardgas (zoals LNG, CNG en pijpleidingen) zolang dat schip niet verder dan maximaal 3000 zeemijl moet varen tot de haven waar de hydraten gelost kunnen worden. Ook die koeling kost immers energie en geld. Methaanhydraten ontginnen is daarom op dit moment enkel haalbaar voor landen die veel geld betalen voor de invoer van aardgas én die vlakbij een van die locaties met hoge concentraties hydraten gelegen zijn.

Tikkende methaanbom?

Wat het hele methaanhydraatverhaal nog complexer maakt, is de opwarming van de aarde zelf. Hoe hoger de temperatuur van het zeewater, hoe minder stabiel de hydraten. Langzaamaan zijn deze dus ook nu al aan het uiteenvallen. Sommige onderzoekers hebben daardoor de “clathrate gun”-hypothese naar voren geschoven. Dit is een situatie waarbij de opwarming van de planeet voorbij een zogenoemd kantelpunt schiet, en daardoor gigantische hoeveelheden methaangas ontsnappen. Die extra hoeveelheden methaan versterken het broeikaseffect, zodat de temperatuur nog verder oploopt en er nog meer methaanhydraatvoorraden destabiliseren, in een destructieve spiraal. Dit kantelpunt moet dan ook te allen tijde vermeden worden.

Zo ver is het op dit moment nog niet: de hoeveelheden methaan die op dit moment uit de hydraten ontsnappen, zijn nog niet groot genoeg om een noemenswaardige impact te hebben op de klimaatcrisis van onze planeet. Wel moet al wie deze hydraten wil ontginnen, de nodige voorzorgen aan de dag leggen, en voorkomen dat er ongewild methaan vrijkomt tijdens het proces. Bovendien mogen we ook nooit vergeten dat zelfs deze schonere hydraten een fossiele brandstof zijn en blijven, en dat deze ruim beschikbare energiebron ons niet mag tegenhouden om finaal over te schakelen op hernieuwbare energie.

Tot besluit…

De overvloedige aanwezigheid van methaanhydraten en de nood aan betaalbare brandstoffen maken van dit brandbaar ijs een nuttige en veelbelovende energiebron, tenminste voor een aantal landen die nu zeer veel betalen voor hun bevoorrading. De ontginning van methaanhydraten en de consumptie van aardgas uit methaanhydraten dragen echter onvermijdelijk bij tot de opwarming van ons klimaat. Of laten we het “brandend ijs”, gezien de opmars van groene energie, niet beter onontgonnen? Tot spijt van wie het benijdt zal het antwoord niet in het minst afhangen van de beschikbaarheid en economische haalbaarheid van echt milieuvriendelijke alternatieven.
