Een wereld naar Gods plan. Duurzaamheid in een religieuze ontwikkelings-ngo, 1968-1994

Laat ons bouwen aan een aards paradijs

‘Ga door, Greta. Gewoon doorgaan!’ zei paus Franciscus glimlachend tegen het meisje met de vlechtjes voor hem. Zij knikte ijverig maar bedeesd terug naar de innemende man voor haar.          
         Spilfiguren van het katholieke christendom en milieuactivisten zoals de jonge Greta Thunberg staan tegenwoordig op goede voet met elkaar en streven met overtuiging hetzelfde doel na. Beide willen ze een duurzame omgang met de aarde promoten, zodat die bewoonbaar blijft voor alle mensen nu en voor de generaties die na ons komen. Bent u ook benieuwd of die amicale relatie altijd heeft bestaan? Of de christelijke religie altijd al een bron van inspiratie was om duurzaam te leven? En duurzaam, wat dat dan was?       
         Mijn masterproef onderzocht de relatie tussen een religieuze inspiratie en een engagement voor duurzaamheid binnen het veld van ontwikkelingshulp door ngo’s. Ik was nieuwsgierig naar de manieren waarop duurzame ontwikkeling, een term die vandaag zo alomtegenwoordig is, in vorige decennia werd begrepen en wat mensen motiveerde om ernaar te handelen. Om dat te onderzoeken gebruikte ik archiefmateriaal van de Vlaamse ngo Broederlijk Delen uit de periode 1968-1994. Aan de hand van een discoursanalyse onderzocht ik op welke momenten de term duurzaamheid voorkwam en welke andere termen en betekenissen daaraan gekoppeld werden.

De voortuin van het paradijs
         Uit het onderzoek werd duidelijk dat duurzaamheid lange tijd geen ecologische betekenis in zich droeg. Als Broederlijk Delen een duurzaam project wilde uitvoeren, wilde het er in de eerste plaats voor zorgen dat zijn projecten op lange termijn de levensomstandigheden van zijn doelgroep konden verbeteren. Om dat te bekomen, was het niet genoeg om alleen maar geld te geven of ziekenhuizen te bouwen. Als ontwikkelingshulp de kloof tussen hulpverlenende en hulpontvangende landen wilde dichten, moest er aan beide zijden iets structureel veranderen.     
          Gemeenschappen in hulpontvangende landen moesten bewust worden gemaakt van hun eigenwaarde. Hulp moest bovendien zichzelf overbodig maken door ‘mensen te helpen zichzelf te helpen’. Andersom moesten westerse landen hun buitensporige consumptie temperen om hulpontvangers ademruimte te geven, want, zo zei de organisatie: ‘het Westen houdt de Derde Wereld arm’.

          Het nastreven van duurzame ontwikkeling ging dus gepaard met een flinke dosis maatschappijkritiek. Een christelijke inspiratie speelde in deze houding een belangrijke rol, hoewel dat dan vooral een links-geïnspireerde variant van het christendom was die vanuit Latijns-Amerika kwam overwaaien. Het religieuze ‘zonde’-concept werd gebruikt om de onrechtvaardige internationale structuren als ‘zondige structuren’ te bestempelen. Hulpprojecten vertrokken vaak vanuit kleine christelijke gemeenschappen en in Vlaanderen sprak de ngo mensen aan op de plichten van hun christelijke geloof om te delen met de armsten.         
 
De achtertuin van het paradijs
         Geleidelijk aan kreeg duurzaamheid ook een ecologische betekenis. In 1989 was de zorg voor het milieu zelfs een hoofdthema voor Broederlijk Delen. Het was de ngo dan duidelijk geworden dat een verslechtering van het milieu de zwaarste impact had op die armste bevolkingsgroepen die het wilde helpen. Die nieuwe invulling week trouwens niet al te sterk af van de vorige. Een mentaliteitswijziging in het Westen bleef een centraal streefdoel en de ontwikkeling van hulpontvangende landen mocht andersom niet tot een even belastende levensstijl leiden.

         Ook voor het gebruik van een ecologisch discours speelde de religieuze inspiratie een rol, hoewel niet alleen op een positieve manier. In de jaren zestig klonk zelfs de beschuldiging dat het antropocentrisme van de christelijke religie verantwoordelijk was voor de toen recent ‘ontdekte’ milieucrisis. Aanvankelijk vormde de religieuze basis voor Broederlijk Delen inderdaad eerder een struikelblok om ecologisch duurzaam te handelen. Ten eerste was menselijke waardigheid een absolute prioriteit binnen de religieuze inspiratie, ten koste van ieder ander belang. Daarnaast speelde ook de grote kerkelijke focus op de strijd om grondeigendom voor de armen in het nadeel van aandacht voor milieubehoud.
         Toch kon religie ook een positieve motivatie bieden om ecologisch duurzame ontwikkelingshulp na te streven. Het was namelijk een conferentie van christelijke kerken die de belangrijkste inspiratiebron vormde voor Broederlijk Delen om zijn prioriteiten bij te stellen. Die conferentie deed de ngo beseffen dat ‘de heelheid van de Schepping’ niet verloren mocht gaan. Daarnaast kon de organisatie gebruikmaken van een religieus geïnspireerd idee van rentmeesterschap in zijn discours. De mens moest de aarde niet beheersen, maar beheren, niet onderwerpen, maar respecteren. ‘God zorgt weliswaar voor de mens, maar evenzeer voor de leliën in het veld en voor de vogels in de lucht’, zo verzekerde de ngo haar achterban.

         Tot slot bracht de christelijke achtergrond van Broederlijk Delen een interessante troef mee, die de ngo handig kon inzetten voor de promotie van een duurzame levensstijl: de vasten. Broederlijk Delen was in 1961 opgericht met een dubbel doel, namelijk de hongersnood verhelpen in Republiek Congo enerzijds en de christelijke vasten in België nieuw leven inblazen anderzijds. Decennia later bleven vasten en versobering centrale concepten die heel eenvoudig een ecologisch jasje konden aantrekken. Broederlijk Delen zette bijvoorbeeld sterk in op een verminderde vleesconsumptie ten voordele van de aarde. Daarin ging de ngo trouwens verder dan de religieuze voorschriften, maar de basis was duidelijk religieus gefundeerd en gelegitimeerd. Kortom, ook voor een ecologische betekenis van duurzaamheid kon Broederlijk Delen uiteindelijk bogen op zijn christelijke achtergrond.

En zo gaat het door
         Wanneer de paus Greta warmhartig aanmoedigt, komt zijn bekommernis dus niet uit het ijle. De christelijke religie kon ook in het verleden een inspiratiebron bieden om duurzaam te handelen en heeft die rol duidelijk nog niet neergelegd.
