Hey Google, wat doe je? De domesticatie van smart speakers in Vlaanderen

Uw smart speaker, uw vriend?

“Hey Google, goedemorgen.” De verlichting in de badkamer springt aan, het koffieapparaat begint te pruttelen en Martine Tanghe vertelt je het meest recente nieuws.

In mei van 2019 leerde we in Vlaanderen de Google Assistent kennen. In de vorm van de smart speaker Google Home of Google Nest zou deze ons leven aanzienlijk gemakkelijker moeten maken door te helpen bij onze dagelijkse routines. Een jaar later maken we de balans op. Wordt spraaktechnologie gebruikt om te helpen in het huishouden of is het simpelweg een nieuwe vorm van entertainment?

Smart speaker?

Luidsprekers om tegen te praten, smart speakers, werden voor het eerst geïntroduceerd in de markt door Amazon, die de Amazon Echo ontwikkelde met de assistent Alexa. Later volgde onder andere de Apple Homepod, uitgerust met Siri en de Google Home met de Google Assistant.

Een smart speaker bedienen doe je met je stem, via spraaktechnologie. Het toestel ‘wekken’ kan via een triggerwoord zoals “Hey Google”. Daarna stel je je vraag of geef je een commando, een actie die de speaker moet uitvoeren. Op zijn beurt zal de smart speaker een antwoord geven of de actie uitvoeren.

In Vlaanderen maakt 9% van de bevolking gebruik van zo’n smart speaker. Maar waarvoor? Wat is het nut van zo’n apparaat?

Een betere kijk op het gebruik

Om het gebruik van nieuwe technologie onder de loep te nemen maken onderzoekers ook wel eens gebruik van de domesticatietheorie: welke regels worden toegepast om de nieuwe technologie te temmen? Daarin wordt gekeken naar vier verschillende fases die worden doorlopen. Van de aankoop van het apparaat, tot de plaats die we het geven, wanneer we het gebruiken en waarvoor. Zo kan achterhaald worden welke betekenis wordt toegekend aan het toestel, en dus hoe het gebruikt zal worden.

Door gebruik onder te verdelen in deze vier fases is het gemakkelijker om na te gaan met welk doel we in Vlaanderen gebruik maken van een slimme luidspreker met spraakassistent. We stelden verschillende eigenaars van een smart speaker vragen over hoe zij deze vier fases hadden ingevuld en ervaren. Uit deze gesprekken konden we enkele belangrijke conclusies trekken over het gebruik van de smart speaker in Vlaanderen.

Zoals bijvoorbeeld de plaats van de luidspreker. Daar waren alle deelnemers het over eens: de woonkamer. En dan nog liefst zo centraal mogelijk in de kamer, dicht bij een stopcontact.

Vaak wordt de smart speaker dus een vaste plaats toegekend naast de televisie, dat andere belangrijke technologische apparaat in ons leven. In plaats van het weg te stoppen, zoals we met een stofzuiger zouden doen, wordt de luidspreker geïntegreerd in het interieur. Het uiterlijk van de luidspreker is dus belangrijk. Of we smukken het op door het te vergezellen van een plantje.

Wat is het gebruiksdoel?

Naast het toekennen van een plaats in huis geven we nieuwe technologie ook een eigen betekenis door het een specifiek gebruiksdoel toe te kennen. Hiervoor bekeken we duizenden commando’s die mensen aan hun Google Home hadden gegeven.

De lange waslijst van acties voor de Google Assistent – denk bijvoorbeeld aan muziek afspelen via Spotify of je Phillips Hue lampen dimmen – kunnen onderverdeeld worden in drie categorieën op basis van de betekenis ervan: het gebruiken van de smart speaker als een persoonlijke assistent, in functie van entertainment of praten met de speaker zoals met een vriend.

Op basis daarvan zien we in Vlaanderen twee grote groepen voorkomen. Zij die hun slimme luidspreker gebruiken als een traditionele radio, dus voor entertainment, en zij die bijkomend ook nog hun smart speaker gebruiken om andere apparaten in huis of dagelijkse routines te automatiseren. Beide groepen vinden de functies van de smart speaker als vriend – denk bijvoorbeeld aan moppen vertellen – een leuk extraatje maar niet belangrijk.

Wat hebben we geleerd?

Wat hebben we dankzij dit onderzoek nu geleerd over het gebruik van de Google Home in Vlaanderen?

Dat een smart speaker eigenlijk gewoon een luidspreker is. Gebruikers van deze toestellen hechten het meeste belang aan de functies om muziek of radio te beluisteren. Het doel waarvoor menig smart speaker in de markt wordt gezet, het bedienen van andere slimme apparaten in huis, daar kan de Vlaming zich minder in vinden. Logisch, want het vervangen van de traditionele ‘domme’ apparaten door slimme varianten die bediend kunnen worden via de slimme luidspreker, is een grote en kostelijke ingreep.

Slimme technologie, en daarmee het gebruik van een smart speaker voor de bediening ervan, is dus een opportuniteit voor de toekomst. Een trage evolutie, geen revolutie. Tot dan gebruiken we in Vlaanderen onze Google Home als persoonlijke DJ.
