Bouwen aan de UGent - Hoe duurzaam is het en wat kan er beter?

Duurzaam bouwen, kan dat?

In juli 2021 stroomden grote delen van Wallonië onder water. De kracht van natuurfenomenen werd duidelijk en we voelden ons mateloos machteloos. Laat dit een oproep zijn om ons bewust te worden van wat we doen. Als heelder steden verhard zijn, kan water nergens naartoe. Verharding beperken is noodzakelijk om klimaatrobuuste steden te bouwen.

Bouwen en gebouwen hebben een grote impact op het leefmilieu. De bouwsector is verantwoordelijk voor meer dan 30% van de ontginning van natuurlijke grondstoffen, een kwart van het vaste afval, 40% van het materiaalgebruik en van het totale energiegebruik en bijna 19% van de broeikasgasemissies.

Duurzaam bouwen?

Hoewel duurzaamheid meer en meer een buzzword aan het worden is, is dat toch de term die ik wil blijven gebruiken. Het Brundtland rapport van 1987 definieert duurzame ontwikkeling als “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Dat vind ik de beste definitie van duurzaamheid die ik tot nu toe gehoord heb. “We lenen de aarde van onze kinderen”.

Als we spreken over duurzaam bouwen, zijn minstens vier pijlers van belang: energiegebruik, milieu-impact van bouwmaterialen, ontginning van materialen en behoud van groene ruimte.

Energiegebruik is tweeledig. Enerzijds is er de operationele energie voor verwarming, lichten en elektrische toepassingen bijvoorbeeld. De evolutie naar passieve gebouwen heeft hier een sterk antwoord aan geboden. Anderzijds gaat de evolutie naar energiezuinige gebouwen vaak gepaard met een toename van de andere energiecomponent, de ingebedde energie. De ingebedde energie is alle energie die nodig is om tot een product te komen: ontginning, transport, productieprocessen … Cement, beton en staal hebben door de zeer hoge verwerkingstemperaturen vaak een grotere ingebedde energie dan biogebaseerde materialen zoals hout waar vaak minder belastende verwerkingsprocessen voor nodig zijn. Bovendien slaan biogebaseerde materialen koolstof op tijdens hun groeifase wat de milieu-impact verder verlaagt.

Circulair bouwen vormt een antwoord op verschillende uitdagingen van de bouwsector. Gebouwen worden gezien als tijdelijke configuraties van componenten en materialen. De initiële milieu-impact van materialen wordt zo verdeeld over verschillende levenscyli. Om circulair bouwen werkelijkheid te maken zijn materiaalpaspoorten van groot belang om te weten welke materialen in de gebouwen zitten, waar en wat de staat en de historiek is van die materialen. Met Building Information Modelling (BIM) wordt die informatie gedigitaliseerd. Daarnaast is het ook van belang dat verbindingen omkeerbaar zijn, eenvoudig en toegankelijk en het aantal minimaal. Schroeven en bouten worden verkozen boven lijm en cement. Gebouwen dienen bovendien opgebouwd te worden in een gelaagdheid volgens levensduur. Decoratielagen en technieken liggen oppervlakkig en goed toegankelijk zodat ze makkelijk vervangen kunnen worden zonder de langer meegaande elementen te beschadigen.

Traditioneel bouwen waarbij elk gebouw een prototype is, is zeer duur door de hoge studie- en faalkosten. Prefabricatie en de bouwwerf zien als assemblageplaats zorgen voor het beheersen van doorlooptijd, kwaliteit en kostprijs van bouwprojecten en zijn gunstig voor de uniformiteit en compatibiliteit van bouwcomponenten en zo hergebruikpotentieel en vermindering van bouwafval.

Waar ’t groen is, is ’t bezet.

Nog te veel wordt groene ruimte gezien als open ruimte voor ontwikkeling. Je kan niet spreken over duurzaam bouwen als je groen opoffert voor de plaatsing van een gebouw. Groene ruimte is van groot belang voor koolstofopvang, waterberging, biodiversiteit en het beperken van het hitte-eilandeffect. De biodiversiteit staat sterk onder druk. Sinds het bestaan van de mensheid is de snelheid waarmee soorten wereldwijd uitsterven nog nooit zo hoog geweest. De biodiversiteit staat in voor het leveren van essentiële diensten aan mens en maatschappij, zoals gewasbestuiving, plaagbeheersing, voedselvoorziening, zuiver water en propere lucht. Daarenboven brengt de natuur inspiratie voor oplossingen voor verschillende problemen. Natuur en biodiversiteit moeten behouden worden om toekomstige generaties toe te laten conclusies te trekken van de natuur of dingen van de natuur te ontdekken die we vandaag nog niet zien. We verschralen de aarde en haar mogelijkheden door biodiversiteit en natuur op te geven.

Een evaluatie van UGent beleidskaders, een case study, en de GRO

De UGent beschikt over verschillende beleidskaders om duurzaam bouwen richting te geven. Bij het bekijken van een casestudy blijkt het omzetten van die kaders in de praktijk echter niet evident. Het budget is een belangrijke randvoorwaarde die harde beslissingen forceert. Extra ruimte voor studenten en personeel of een meer klimaatvriendelijk en veranderingsgericht gebouw? De hoeveelheid geld staat vast.

Bij het ontwerp worden algemene, theoretische oppervlaktenormen gehanteerd en er wordt sterk gestreefd naar een compacte universiteit, maar de oppervlaktenormen blijken te krap. Compact bouwen is belangrijk en heeft grote duurzaamheidsvoordelen (beperken van grondinname, energiezuiniger, minder onderhoudskosten, makkelijker te beheersen), maar ruimte bieden voor de gebruikers van in het begin, kan het proces sterk versnellen.

Duurzaamheid is zeer complex, moeilijk op te splitsen in deelelementen en moeilijk te kwantificeren. De GRO (uitgesproken als “gro”) is een tool ontwikkeld door de Vlaamse overheid om duurzaamheid van gebouwen te proberen kwantificeren. De GRO behandelt veel verschillende aspecten en geeft handvaten om ambities te structureren en op te volgen, maar is weinig gebruiksvriendelijk, zeer administratief en omslachtig. Ook kan de vraag gesteld worden in welke mate alle GRO-criteria onder de Brundtland definitie van duurzaamheid vallen. Duurzaamheid wordt in zeer brede zin bekeken en comfort speelt een grote rol. De vraag is of comfort zo sterk aanwezig moet zijn in een duurzaamheidsmeter en hetzelfde gewicht moet krijgen als energie- en materiaalgebruiksaspecten. Werken met wegingsfactoren of een prioritering lijkt relevant.

Een gebouw zetten is een complex proces waarbij rekening gehouden moet worden met tal van factoren. Interdisciplinair onderzoek is noodzakelijk om antwoorden op duurzaamheidsvraagstukken te kunnen geven, rekening houdende met verschillende factoren en belangen.
