Brand halo effect in termen van gezondheidspercepties naargelang het type huismerk

S.O.S. gezonde voeding: nationaal merk of huismerk?

“De coronacrisis heeft mij echt wakker geschud. Ik besef meer dan ooit hoe belangrijk mijn gezondheid is en daarom wil ik gezonder beginnen koken voor mezelf en mijn gezin. Vanaf nu grijp ik in de supermarkt naar voedingsproducten van nationale merken omdat de kwaliteit mij beter lijkt. Je ziet ook dat de verpakkingen sterker en mooier zijn. Ik koop geen goedkopere huismerken want ze zijn minder gezond. Vanaf nu een gezondere levensstijl ten huize Declerck.”

Het kopen van gezondere voedingsproducten is dé nieuwe drijfveer van consumenten sinds de coronacrisis. In de bovenstaande getuigenis koopt een consument bewust nationale merken in de supermarkt. Dit zijn dure A-merken, zoals Nutella of Iglo, die sterk gepromoot worden door fabrikanten, maar niet noodzakelijk gezonder zijn dan huismerken. Mogelijks is er hier een brand halo effect aanwezig. Dit is een vertekening in het brein van consumenten die ervoor zorgt dat ze (on)terecht huismerken minder gezond vinden dan nationale merken. Indien dit het geval is, zou dat komen doordat ze huismerken ook minder kwaliteitsvol of aantrekkelijk vinden. Mijn onderzoek gaat na of huismerken benadeeld worden en tracht hier een antwoord op te vinden.

Huismerken: meer dan enkel de klassieke witte verpakking

Huismerken evolueerden sterk over de jaren heen. Vroeger stonden huismerken gelijk aan een lage prijs en kwaliteit. De kwaliteitskloof met nationale merken was sterk te voelen waardoor veel consumenten negatieve percepties ten aanzien van huismerken creëerden. Tegenwoordig liggen de kaarten anders. Momenteel vind je op de markt verschillende type huismerken waaronder economische (zeer goedkoop), standaard (goedkoop) en premium huismerken (normaal/duur).

In dit onderzoek besloot ik  de gezondheidspercepties van consumenten ten opzichte van economische en standaard huismerken te meten. Meer specifiek onderzocht ik of consumenten deze twee type huismerken minder gezond vinden dan nationale merken.

Maatschappelijk belang: de coronacrisis

Belangrijk is om rekening te houden met het hedendaagse tijdskader waarin consumenten winkelen. Ook hier laat de coronacrisis zich dus voelen. 

Ten eerste veranderden veel consumenten tijdens de coronacrisis hun koopgedrag sterk. Ze hamsterden vaak waardoor veel nationale merken uit de winkelrekken verdwenen. Dit betekent dat verschillende consumenten noodgedwongen – en vaak voor een eerste keer – huismerken aankochten.

Ten tweede zijn consumenten in financieel onzekere tijden geneigd om voorzichtiger om te springen met hun uitgaven. De coronacrisis zorgde ervoor dat de laaggeprijsde huismerken een goede keuze waren.

Ten derde heerste er voor de coronacrisis al een gezondheidstendens die verder werd versterkt. Het belang van een goede gezondheid is een cruciale factor. Consumenten willen gezondere voedingskeuzes maken en dat zien we ook terug in hun koopgedrag.

Het brand halo effect beïnvloedt consumenten

Vinden consumenten nationale merken gezonder dan economische of standaard huismerken? En zo ja, is dit dan te wijten aan het brand halo effect? Dit zou betekenen dat consumenten nationale merken automatisch gezonder vinden dan huismerken, omdat ze nationale merken ook kwaliteitsvoller en aantrekkelijker vinden.

Andere beïnvloedende factoren

Elke consument is uniek en vertoont tijdens het winkelen andere kenmerken die het brand halo effect kunnen beïnvloeden. Zo kan de algemene attitude van consumenten tegenover huismerken een rol spelen. In dit voorbeeld zou een consument met een positieve attitude tegenover huismerken, sneller geneigd zijn huismerken gezonder te vinden. Deze potentieel beïnvloedende factor werd in mijn onderzoek verder onderzocht. Daarnaast hield ik ook rekening met het gezondheidsbewustzijn en de nutritionele kennis van elke consument. 

Ontwerp

Aan de hand van directe productvergelijkingen ging ik na of consumenten nationale merken gezonder vinden dan huismerken. Meer specifiek stelde ik een online vragenlijst op waarin 18 economische huismerken van Everyday en 18 standaard huismerken van Boni vergeleken werden met hun tegenhangers in nationale merken. Elke deelnemer kreeg zes verschillende productvergelijkingen te zien en telkens werd gevraagd welk voedingsproduct ze gezonder, kwaliteitsvoller of aantrekkelijker vonden.

De geselecteerde voedingsproducten in het onderzoek kwamen uit drie verschillende productcategorieën: gezond, ambigue en ongezond. Dit was belangrijk, omdat de gezondheidspercepties van consumenten tegenover voedingsproducten tussen deze productcategorieën standaard al verschillen. 

Huismerken zijn even gezond

In mijn onderzoek werd geen grootschalig brand halo effect vastgesteld. Consumenten vinden huismerken gemiddeld even gezond als nationale merken. De voorkeur voor huismerken of nationale merken (NB) was namelijk gelijkmatig verdeeld. Bovendien lijkt de kwaliteitskloof ten opzichte van nationale merken ook kleiner geworden. Het resultaat was ook niet verschillend naargelang het type huismerk en wordt ook niet beïnvloed door consumenten hun algemene attitude tegenover huismerken, hun gezondheidsbewustzijn en hun nutritionele kennis.

Verder tonen de resultaten dat de kwaliteits- en aantrekkelijkheidsperceptie in lijn liggen met de gezondheidspercepties van consumenten. Concreet betekent dit dat wanneer consumenten nationale merken gezonder vinden, ze ook geneigd zijn om nationale merken kwaliteitsvoller en aantrekkelijker te vinden. De deelnemers die zo redeneerden, waren dus onderhevig aan het brand halo effect. Hetzelfde kan ook omgekeerd voor huismerken worden gezegd.

Een gezonde toekomst in met een brand halo bril?

In het voorbeeld in het begin van dit artikel kiest een consument resoluut voor nationale merken omdat hij/zij denkt dat deze gezonder zijn. Deze consument bekijkt zijn/haar aankopen vermoedelijk door een brand halo bril. We blijven echter nog steeds met vragen achter. Heeft de coronacrisis ons anders doen denken over huismerken? Zou hetzelfde resultaat gevonden zijn voor andere type merken (premium, etc.) of retailers (Delhaize, etc.)? Toekomstig onderzoek kan het brand halo effect verder onderzoeken en dit in een breder kader. Zo komen we stapje per stapje meer te weten over de merkkeuzes van deze nieuwe, gezonde consumenten.
