Gewezen profvoetballers met ambitie om coach te worden, welke stappen zijn nodig om succesvol te worden?

Intro : Jonge, ambitieuze trainers die meteen hun kans wagen als hoofdtrainer voordat ze andere ervaringen opdoen, zetten een succesvolle, professionele trainerscarrière op het spel. Dat blijkt uit de masterthesis van Marco Verheuge (UGent), die hij uitvoerde in samenwerking met het kenniscentrum van de Belgische Voetbalbond.

Marco Verheuge, de auteur van deze thesis, is zelf aanvoerder van de tweede nationaler KSC Dikkelvenne en is een echt voetbaldier. “Wanneer de mogelijkheid zich voordeed om een onderwerp over voetbal te kiezen, hoefde ik niet lang na te denken. Voor mij was het schrijven van de thesis een enorme uitdaging maar ik kan nu wel zeggen dat ik zeer fier ben op het resultaat.” Verheuge had de bedoeling om een thesis te schrijven dat een verschil zou maken voor de voetbalwereld en dat is volgens hem gelukt: “De voetbalbond gaat de resultaten van mijn thesis gebruiken in hun opleiding van de voetbalcoaches. Op deze manier kunnen de coaches een nog betere begeleiding krijgen waardoor zij de juiste keuzes kunnen maken aan het begin van hun carrière.”

Ervaring als assistent of jeugdtrainer kan het verschil maken

Voor zijn onderzoek verzamelde Verheuge in samenwerking met de KBVB data over meer dan 200 oud-profvoetballers die in België een UEFA B trainersdiploma of hoger behaalden in de afgelopen 40 jaar. Onder meer de carrières van Philippe Clement, Frank Vercauteren, Michel Preud'homme en Glen De Boeck werden opgenomen in het onderzoek. De dataverzameling was een waar huzarenstuk waarbij heel veel data werd verzameld. Zo moest ieder parcours van iedere coach met een verleden als profvoetballer in kaart worden gebracht. Daarnaast moesten ook de resultaten, bestaande uit alle matchen in de reguliere competitie worden verzameld om het succes te kunnen bepalen. “Het heeft mij letterlijk bloed, zweet en tranen gekost maar het was het allemaal waard. Een thesis schrijven is een traject van vallen en opstaan. Opgeven stond niet in mijn woordenboek mede door het feit dat voetbal mijn grootste passie is.”, zegt Verheuge enthousiast.

Marco Verheuge analyseerde data van meer dan 200 trainers om tot zijn bevindingen te komen.

 

Wat blijkt? De succesvolle trainers hebben een belangrijk kenmerk gemeenschappelijk. “Er is een positieve associatie tussen voorafgaande ervaring als assistent of jeugdtrainer en het succes als hoofdtrainer nadien,” zegt Verheuge, master in de bestuurskunde.

Uit het niets een topcoach worden, dat werkt vaak niet.

Deze bevinding staat in contrast met oud-spelers die meteen na hun carrière aan de slag gaan als hoofdtrainer. De resultaten tonen aan dat deze het over het algemeen lastiger hebben om succesvol te worden. Kris Van Der Haegen, directeur van de trainersopleiding bij de KBVB, is niet verbaasd: “Meteen starten als hoofdcoach is een groot risico. Geduldig zijn is niet gemakkelijk, maar het belangrijk op weg naar succes. Uit het niets een topcoach worden, dat werkt vaak niet. Dit moeten we duidelijk maken aan de jonge trainers in onze opleiding.”

 

De visie van wereldtoppers

Om dit belangrijke resultaat te kaderen, sprak de Voetbalbond met een aantal wereldtoppers in hun vak. Yves Vanderhaeghe, ex-profvoetballer en huidig hoofdcoach van de eerste klasser Cercle Brugge, geeft het zelf ook aan: “Het succes als speler staat los van het succes als jonge trainer. Opleiding, kennis en data zijn belangrijk. Je moet leren de juiste boodschap en waarden over te brengen naar de spelers.” Ook Roberto Martínez, bondscoach en technisch directeur van de KBVB schaart zich achter de bevinding: “Ervaring opdoen is voor een coach cruciaal, de jaren als jeugdcoach en assistent-coach zorgen ervoor dat de coach zich optimaal kan voorbereiden op zijn rol als hoofdcoach. Dit onderzoek is belangrijk voor de toekomst van onze Belgische coaches.”

Verheuge is één van de studenten die zijn masterthesis maakte in samenwerking met het RBFA Knowledge Centre. Zijn promotoren prof. dr. Stijn Baert, dr. Simon Amez (UGent) en dr. Matteo Balliauw (KBVB) zijn unaniem positief over deze samenwerking. Topeconoom Baert in het interview met de KBVB: “Zo een samenwerking is een win-win-win voor alle partijen.” Ook Verheuge is enthousiast: “De data en expertise die het kenniscentrum ter beschikking stelde, hebben er in grote mate toe bijgedragen dat we interessante en relevante resultaten vonden voor het Belgische voetbal.”
