Language Learning Motivation of Flemish Secondary-School Students

Vlaamse leerlingen lusten geen Duits

Onderzoek naar de motivatie van Vlaamse leerlingen toont aan dat ze liever Engelse les volgen dan Duitse. Ze vinden hun leerkracht Duits wel beter dan hun leerkracht Engels.

Zijn leerlingen gemotiveerd voor Duits en Engels?

Als mens hebben we nood aan taal om te communiceren. Door de globalisering worden we aan veel meer talen blootgesteld en is het ook nodig dat we meer dan één taal spreken.

Vlaamse leerlingen krijgen bijgevolg al in de lagere school lessen Frans, later komt daar nog het internationale Engels bij en daarna vaak nog een derde vreemde taal, zoals het Duits. Talen maken dus een belangrijk deel uit van het schooltraject. Aaricia Herygers, masterstudente Taalkunde aan de KU Leuven, vroeg zich daarom af: “Hebben leerlingen überhaupt de motivatie om vreemde talen te leren?”

Meer dan 1500 Vlaamse en Brusselse leerlingen uit de derde graad lieten weten hoe het staat met hun motivatie om Duits te leren. Daarvan vulden ook 600 leerlingen de online bevraging voor Engels in. De antwoorden zijn opvallend, maar niet verrassend: de algemene motivatie voor Duits ligt beduidend lager dan die voor Engels.

Die motivatie wordt in negen thema’s onderverdeeld: motivatie-intensiteit (bv. hard werken om de taal te leren), verlangen om de taal te leren, attitudes tegenover de taal, integratieve oriëntatie (bv. contact met Duitsers of Engelsen), instrumentele oriëntatie (bv. goede job), evaluatie van de leerkracht, evaluatie van de lessen, angst in de les, zelfzekerheid in de les. 

Bij alle thema’s kwamen voor Engels hogere scores uit de bus, behalve bij de evaluatie van de leerkracht. Leerkrachten Duits lijken het dus beter te doen dan leerkrachten Engels. Een mogelijke reden hiervoor is dat leerlingen al veel meer Engels kennen en hun leerkrachten zich dus meer moeten inzetten om hun leerlingen iets nieuws bij te brengen. 

Jongens zijn zelfzekerder

Er werd ook gekeken naar de invloed van het gender van de leerlingen op hun motivatie. Meisjes hebben bijvoorbeeld een groter verlangen om Duits te leren dan jongens, maar ze hebben wel meer angst om te spreken in hun lessen Duits en Engels dan jongens. Ook zijn meisjes minder zelfzeker over hun capaciteiten in de les Engels. Aangezien jongens minder voor richtingen met vreemde talen kiezen, is dit wel verrassend.

Een verdere focus van het onderzoek was de invloed van het onderwijstype, of de ‘finaliteit’, op de motivatie. Leerlingen in het aso (doorstroomfinaliteit) waren over het algemeen meer gemotiveerd voor Duits dan leerlingen in het tso (dubbele finaliteit). Dat uitte zich ook in verschillende thema’s: aso’ers staan positiever tegenover hun leerkrachten Duits en zijn zelfzekerder dan tso’ers. Bovendien waren aso’ers meer integratief georiënteerd, wat bijvoorbeeld betekent dat ze meer willen weten over de Duitse cultuur. 

Voor Engels hadden net de tso’ers een hogere motivatie-intensiteit en positievere attitude tegenover de taal. Ze geloofden wel minder in hun Engelse vaardigheden dan leerlingen in het aso.

“Afstandslessen Duits zijn zeer moeilijk te volgen”

De leerlingen konden in de bevraging ook opmerkingen achterlaten over de invloed van de coronacrisis op hun motivatie. We kunnen hier een duidelijk verschil opmerken tussen de twee bestudeerde talen. Voor Engels merkten de leerlingen op dat ze meer tijd hebben om Engels te spreken met hun online contacten, Engelse boeken te lezen of Engelse films te kijken.

Het afstandsonderwijs heeft de motivatie voor Duits net verlaagd: leerlingen vinden het moeilijker en saaier of hebben zelfs amper nog lessen Duits. De masterproef pleit daarom ook voor meer inspanningen om de motivatie voor Duits te verhogen.
