Les enjeux émotionnels de l'interprétation dans les services publics: l'impact sur l'interprète et les moyens d'y faire face

Zeg dat ik het gezegd heb: jouw talenknobbel is goud waard! Niet alleen om uit te blinken op de schoolbanken, maar ook om anderstaligen te helpen communiceren. Tolken bouwen bruggen tussen sprekers van verschillende talen, en dat is in onze multiculturele samenleving belangrijker dan ooit. Sociaal tolken doen dat in sociale contexten, zoals ziekenhuizen, scholen of geestelijke gezondheidscentra. Extra moeilijk wordt het echter wanneer ze met emotioneel zware verhalen geconfronteerd worden, iets wat ten tijde van pandemieën, migratiegolven en ongekende milieurampen schering en inslag is. Hoe ga je als tolk om met zulke emotioneel beladen gesprekken? Welke invloed hebben die op jou? Als tolk word je nu eenmaal verondersteld om ook dan het hoofd koel te houden, zonder dat daar tijdens je opleiding veel aandacht aan geschonken werd. Het is dan ook hoog tijd om de emotionele uitdagingen van sociaal tolken onder de loep te nemen!

 Sociaal tolken zijn broodnodig

Dat de Vlaamse samenleving vandaag meer nationaliteiten telt dan een eeuw geleden, valt niet te betwisten. Die culturele diversiteit hebben we niet alleen te danken aan migratie, maar ook aan de globalisering van onze economie. De wereld is één groot netwerk geworden. Zo is het bijvoorbeeld vanzelfsprekend dat we in de lokale supermarkt kiwi’s uit Nieuw-Zeeland en dadels uit Noord-Afrika kunnen kopen, of dat we werelddelen kunnen doorkruisen. Maar die sterke internationale verbondenheid brengt ook uitdagingen met zich mee, want in interacties tussen anderstaligen kunnen talige en culturele verschillen tot communicatieproblemen leiden. Sociaal tolken kunnen in dit geval soelaas bieden. In Vlaanderen worden die taalprofessionals onder meer ingezet tijdens consultaties bij de dokter, oudercontacten of gesprekken bij het OCMW. Ze helpen nieuwkomers en sprekers van andere talen om ook in sociale instanties helder en vlot te communiceren.

“Eerst slikken en dan pas tolken”

Dat tolken cognitief belastend is, is algemeen erkend, maar de bijkomende – onzichtbare – emotionele uitdagingen van sociaal tolken worden vaak vergeten. Onterecht, zo blijkt uit mijn onderzoek met zestien Vlaamse tolken. De meesten gaven aan dat tijdens hun tolkopdrachten zeer regelmatig onderwerpen aangesneden worden die hard aankomen. In geestelijke gezondheidscentra, bijvoorbeeld, moet je “eerst slikken en dan pas tolken”, luidt het.

Emotionele uitdagingen zijn onvoorspelbaar

Je verwacht het misschien niet, maar een zwaar gesprek hoeft niet noodzakelijk over ziektes of trauma’s te gaan. Ook een oudercontact of schuldbemiddeling kan emotioneler uitdraaien dan voorzien. Denk maar aan situaties waarin een van de gesprekspartijen in tranen uitbarst, of agressief wordt tegenover de toehoorder of tegenover de tolk. Meer nog: beeld je eens in dat je voor zonsopkomst een groepje krakers moet vragen om hun spullen te nemen. Of dat je aan ouders moet overbrengen dat ze niet meer zelf voor hun kinderen mogen zorgen. “Ik leef dan met hen mee en voel me schuldig”, getuigt een geïnterviewde tolk.

“Da’s zoals een robot, een andere ‘ik’ die daar is”

Om tijdens bovengenoemde situaties het hoofd boven water te houden, kunnen tolken teruggrijpen naar persoonlijke copingstrategieën. Die handelingen of denkwijzen kunnen hen helpen om de impact van hun emoties op hun concentratie of tolkprestatie te beperken. Ik ontdekte dat sommige tolken een denkbeeldige muur bouwen, terwijl anderen eerder verkiezen om het gesprek nu en dan te pauzeren. Daarnaast merkte ik op dat tolken zichzelf soms buiten de werkelijkheid stellen, “zoals een robot, een andere ‘ik’ die daar is”. De meerderheid gaf me nog de raad om te ontspannen voor of na een vermoedelijk zwaar gesprek. Simpelweg een korte wandeling maken of lekker eten kan al een hoop emotionele stress wegnemen.

Alhoewel, die persoonlijke copingstrategieën blijken niet voor alle tolken te volstaan om de emotionele belasting van hun beroep te compenseren. De tolken die ik heb bevraagd wezen op de nood aan groepsmomenten met collega’s om over de eigen ervaringen te vertellen en te reflecteren, eventueel onder begeleiding van een psycholoog. Desondanks gaven de meesten aan geen weet te hebben van dergelijke praatsessies.

Ook persoonlijkheid speelt mee

Het staat intussen vast: tolken in sociale en publieke instanties kan – onverwachts – emotioneel zeer belastend zijn. Toch zou het onjuist zijn om alle sociaal tolken over één kam te scheren en aan te nemen dat ieder van hen even sterk onder die belasting lijdt. Ik was daarom ook ontzettend benieuwd naar de rol van iemands persoonlijkheid in dit hele verhaal, met verbluffende inzichten als resultaat. Door naast individuele interviews ook persoonlijkheidsvragenlijsten af te nemen en de scores te analyseren, kon ik bovenal aantonen dat iemands emotionele stabiliteit een sleutelrol speelt. Personen die van nature emotioneel kwetsbaar zijn, zullen meer moeite hebben om de zware gesprekken te trotseren. Voor hun tegenpolen geldt het omgekeerde.

Uitdagend, maar ook verrijkend en verreikend!

We kunnen het tot slot niet over sociaal tolken hebben zonder stil te staan bij al het moois dat het beroep te bieden heeft. De tolken wonden er geen doekjes om: wie in sociale instanties tolkt, krijgt niet alleen voldoening, maar leert bovenal ook om zijn grenzen te verleggen en om dankbaarder te zijn. Zo zie je maar dat wat emotioneel uitdagend is, ook psychologisch verrijkend en verreikend kan worden!
