Fictie heeft invloed op hoe wij denken over journalistiek

Vlaamse fictie zorgt voor een negatiever beeld van journalistiek dan internationale fictie, zo blijkt uit een onderzoek van VUB

Welke films en series je kijkt zou wel eens een grote invloed kunnen hebben op hoe jij nadenkt over journalistiek. Dat heeft een studie van de VUB aangetoond. De onderzoekers bevroegen 150 Vlamingen, onder wie ook journalisten. Daaruit blijkt dat degenen die Amerikaanse films en series kijken, vonden dat journalistiek positiever werd voorgesteld dan mensen die alleen Vlaamse films en series kijken.

Journalistiek is een van de weinige beroepen die al sinds het begin van de filmindustrie veel belangstelling opwekken bij zowel producenten als bij het publiek. Nu blijkt dat de films en series die je kijkt een grote invloed kunnen hebben op hoe je nadenkt over journalistiek. Want veel mensen krijgen nooit de kans om in het echt te zien hoe een redactie werkt en moeten dus wel vertrouwen op wat ze op televisie te zien krijgen.

Zo beoordelen mensen de representatie van journalistiek in Vlaamse films en series vaker als sensationeel, onethisch en corrupt dan die in films en series uit andere landen zoals de Verenigde Staten (72.5 procent voor Vlaamse fictie versus 48 procent voor Amerikaanse fictie). Grote fans van Vlaamse fictie kunnen daarom een negatiever beeld hebben van journalistiek. Al moet verder onderzoek nog uitwijzen of die negatieve beoordeling van journalistiek in fictie zich ook doorvertaalt naar de beoordeling van ‘echte journalistiek’.

Negatief voor vrouwen

Bovendien beïnvloedt fictie ook hoe we denken over vrouwelijke journalisten. Zij worden namelijk minder vaak in ‘serieuze’ plots voorgesteld dan hun mannelijke collega’s. Zo gaat slechts 26 procent van de films en series waarin alleen vrouwelijke journalisten worden voorgesteld over onderzoeksjournalistiek in tegenstelling tot 50 procent waarin alleen mannelijke journalisten voorkomen. Het hoeft dan ook niet te verbazen dat Vlamingen fictie met alleen vrouwelijke journalisten vaker beoordelen als sensationeel of onethisch (67.7 procent voor titels met alleen vrouwelijke journalisten versus 54.6 procent voor alleen mannelijke journalisten). Ook journalisten die niet wit of heteroseksueel zijn, verschijnen minder in ‘serieuze’ plots (26.7 procent voor plots over onderzoeksjournalistiek).

Maar niet iedereen beoordeelt journalistiek in fictie daarom op dezelfde manier. De fictie die mannen, oudere mensen en journalisten zich konden herinneren, beoordeelden ze vaker als positief (alle groepen meer dan 50 procent positief). Terwijl vrouwen, jongere mensen en niet-journalisten journalistiek in de fictie die zij zich konden herinneren minder vaak zo beoordeelden (alle groepen minder dan 50 procent positief). Iets om in het achterhoofd te houden dus als je dit weekend op zoek gaat naar een goede film of serie voor je cinema-avond.
