Translations and prizes: Two modes of consecration. A comparative study about the impact of literary prizes on translation flows.

Prijzen en vertalingen: een nauwe samenhang?

"Ik kan niet anders zeggen dan dat ik zo trots ben als een koe met zeven uiers", vertelde Marieke Lucas Rijneveld enthousiast toen hij in 2020 de International Booker Prize won. Literaire prijzen spelen vandaag een belangrijke rol in de literaire wereld en geven auteurs vaak meer prestige. Ook vertalingen zijn een teken van het internationale succes van auteurs. Kunnen prijzen er ook voor zorgen dat een boek meer wordt vertaald?

Prijzen en vertalingen werden met elkaar in verband gebracht door de impact van die prijzen op vertaalstromen (de manier waarop een werk door vertalingen wordt verspreid) te bestuderen. Daarvoor werd er gekeken naar prijzen in drie verschillende taalgroepen. Die groepen waren gebaseerd op Johan Heilbrons indeling van talen in centrale, semi-perifere en perifere talen. Centrale talen zijn volgens de socioloog het Engels, Frans, Duits en Russisch, terwijl de groep semi-perifere talen Spaans, Italiaans, Deens, Zweeds, Pools en Tsjechisch omvat. Alle andere talen zijn perifeer. De eerste prijs die werd bestudeerd was de Libris Literatuur Prijs, die wordt uitgereikt aan Nederlandstalige boeken en dus tot de perifere taalgroep behoort. De tweede prijs was de Booker Prize, die enkel Engelstalige boeken bekroont en daarom een centrale taalprijs is. Tot slot werd ook de Literatuurprijs van de Europese Unie (afgekort als de EUPL, naar de Engelse benaming European Union Prize for Literature) besproken. Die prijs wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan elf tot veertien auteurs, voornamelijk uit landen binnen de Europese Unie, en bekroont dus boeken in verschillende talen. De prijs behoort daarom ook tot alle drie de taalgroepen.

Diverse analyses

Om te begrijpen hoe prijzen vertaaltrajecten kunnen beïnvloeden was het belangrijk om te bespreken hoe die prijzen in elkaar zitten. Van elke prijs werd daarom eerst de organisatiestructuur uitgelegd: wie zit er in de jury, welke boeken maken kans om genomineerd te worden, focust de prijs vooral op commercieel of artistiek succes van een boek, en is er een vertaalbeleid aan de prijs verbonden? Het is namelijk van belang om te weten of een prijs vertalingen van haar winnaars stimuleert. Daarna werden voor elke prijs een kwantitatieve en een kwalitatieve analyse uitgevoerd. De kwantitatieve analyse besprak het gemiddeld aantal vertalingen per prijs en de doeltalen van al die vertalingen, terwijl de kwalitatieve analyse een case study omvatte waarin op één winnend boek werd ingezoomd. Daarin werden een aantal factoren besproken die mogelijk een invloed op het vertaaltraject van dat boek hebben gehad. Verder werd er ook gekeken naar hoe uitgeverijen en nationale overheidsorganisaties zoals Literatuur Vlaanderen die winnende boeken aan buitenlandse uitgeverijen voorstellen en specifiek of zij de prijs daarbij vermelden. Dat is namelijk een belangrijke indicatie van hoe de internationale impact van de prijs door die instanties wordt ingeschat.

HET IS VAN BELANG OM TE WETEN OF EEN PRIJS EEN VERTAALBELEID HEEFT WAARBIJ VERTALINGEN VAN DE WINNAARS WORDEN GESTIMULEERD.

Verschillende impact

De analyses toonden aan dat literaire prijzen vertaalstromen in verschillende mate beïnvloeden. Een eerste belangrijke bevinding was dat de drie prijzen een commercieel doel hebben, omdat ze alle drie financiële stabiliteit voor de winnaar beloven. Het profiel van die winnaars verschilt per prijs: terwijl de EUPL enkel opkomend talent bekroont, kiest de Libris voornamelijk voor reeds gekende schrijvers. Voor de Booker maken zowel beginnende als gevestigde schrijvers kans. Verder hebben de drie prijzen een ander vertaalbeleid. Bij de Libris wordt er helemaal niet op vertalingen gefocust, en ook de organisatie van de Booker zet niet specifiek in op vertalingen van haar winnaars. Daarbij moeten we wel opmerken dat de International Booker Prize, die door dezelfde organisatie wordt uitgereikt, Engelstalige vertalingen van buitenlandse werken bekroont, waardoor vertalingen niet helemaal worden vergeten. Het is echter de EUPL die het meeste aandacht aan vertaalbeleid geeft. De prijs is onderdeel van het Creative Europe Program, dat vertalingen van EUPL-winnaars financieel ondersteunt.

BIJ DE EUPL BLIJKT OOK EUROPESE POLITIEK EEN ROL TE SPELEN.

Er moet natuurlijk ook een blik op de cijfers worden geworpen. Vooral de EUPL en de Booker Prize leidden tot een groot aantal vertalingen (gemiddeldes van respectievelijk 10 en 34 vertalingen per winnaar), voor de Libris Literatuur Prijs was dat minder het geval (gemiddeld vijf vertalingen per boek). Winnaars van de Booker Prize werden ook in meer verschillende doeltalen vertaald dan winnaars van de andere prijzen. Bovendien waren die talen niet beperkt tot talen die voornamelijk op het Europese continent worden gesproken. Voor de EUPL moeten we ook opmerken dat Europese politiek een rol speelt: veel vertalingen werden namelijk gemaakt in landen die recent tot de EU zijn toegetreden of dat van plan zijn.

Belangrijke factoren

De belangrijkste factor bij de EUPL leek het vertaalbeleid van de prijs te zijn (vertalingen worden door de organisatie sterk gestimuleerd), terwijl het groot aantal vertalingen bij de Booker vooral door het prestige en de taal van de prijs leek te komen. Het Engels is nog steeds dé lingua franca, wat van de Booker een internationaal gekende prijs maakt. Uit de kwalitatieve analyse kwamen ook andere factoren naar voren, zoals het al bestaande prestige van de winnaar. Een auteur die eerder al in een bepaalde taal werd vertaald, heeft meer kans om opnieuw in die taal vertaald te worden, zoals bijvoorbeeld bleek uit de case study over Adriaan Van Dis voor de Libris Literatuur Prijs. Tot slot werden prijzen ook telkens vernoemd bij de promotie van het winnende boek door uitgeverijen en nationale literatuurorganisaties.

Literaire prijzen kunnen dus wel degelijk een impact op vertaalstromen hebben, maar er blijven nog heel wat vragen over. Wat is bijvoorbeeld de invloed van een literaire prijs op genomineerde auteurs en op andere (eerdere en toekomstige) werken van een schrijver die een prijs heeft gewonnen? De relatie tussen vertalingen en het literaire prijzenlandschap biedt met andere woorden nog veel vragen voor verder interessant onderzoek.
