“Mama mag ik porno kijken?” Onderzoek naar de invloed van seksueel getinte media op de attitudes en het seksueel gedrag van Vlaamse jongeren. Kan opvoeding deze invloed beperken?
Porno doet niet vroeger in de koffer duiken
Seks is alom tegenwoordig. Zet je televisie of computer aan en je wordt overvallen door een veelheid aan seksueel getinte beelden. Seks verkoopt en is overal aanwezig. U stelt zich vast ook wel de vraag welke invloed dit heeft op het seksuele gedrag en denken van jongeren? Om dit te onderzoeken, vulden 419 Vlaamse jongeren tussen 12 en 18 jaar een vragenlijst in die peilde naar hun seksuele ontwikkeling en opvattingen.
Invloed van porno
De bevindingen waren enigszins geruststellend. Zo werd in de studie geen verband gevonden tussen de leeftijd bij de eerste seksuele ervaring en de mate waarin men zich blootstelt aan seksueel getint materiaal zoals porno. Het is dus niet zo dat jongeren die meer porno kijken ook op jongere leeftijd seks hebben. Er werd echter wel evidentie gevonden dat jongeren die meer naar pornografisch materiaal kijken, meer seksuele ervaring hebben dan jongeren die hier weinig naar kijken. Daarnaast bleek dat blootstelling bijdraagt tot meer permissieve attitudes ten aanzien van seks en omgekeerd.
Opvoeding
In tegenstelling tot wat heel wat ouders hopen, bleek dat de opvoeding weinig tot geen invloed heeft op het seksuele gedrag van jongeren. Een warme, ondersteunende opvoeding buffert wel de invloed die de media heeft op het seksuele gedrag en attitudes. Verrassend genoeg vond de studie dat jongeren die meer seksuele ervaring hebben, één jaar later ook een betere band rapporteren met hun ouders.
Geen reden tot paniek
De invloed van geseksualiseerde media op het seksuele gedrag en attitudes van jongeren werd in deze studie aangetoond. Er is echter geen reden tot paniek. Adolescenten zijn van nature seksuele wezens en het grootste deel van hen maakt een gezonde seksuele ontwikkeling door, ongeacht de dagelijkse blootstelling aan seks via de media. Het is vooral belangrijk om als opvoedingsfiguur het onderwerp ‘seks’ niet te schuwen en jongeren duidelijk te maken dat het beeld dat de media hen voorschotelt van seks niet overeenstemt met de realiteit.
